Fri 6th Oct: The highs and lows of surrenders

Finally the cooler weather has arrived, and I'm sure the dogs and their human walkers will appreciate being able to go out without melting, even if rain will spoil the fun.

I don't know how many times I've posted that we're expecting a certain dog to be surrendered, hoping to have a home waiting, only for the dog not to turn up in the end. This happened yet again with the rottweiler doglet who was due to arrive today, with two lovely potential homes waiting to meet him, but there has been no sign of the dog or word from his current owner.

In and straight out again

On the other hand, we were also asked to take a bichon puppy, freshly purchased from a Mong Kok pet shop and given to someone who didn't want to have a puppy.  (You might ask yourself why on earth would anyone give a live animal as a gift, but people are strange creatures).   The recipient of the puppy asked if we would accept it, and of course we said yes, and immediately contacted one potential adopter who had specifically asked for a bichon frise.  Then we waited, fully expecting that the puppy wouldn't turn up, but in this case it actually did, and he's now in his new home and most definitely staying.

That's the thing about this work, you never know what's going to happen on any given day.   Standard  poodle Macc was another surprise surrender, also a new purchase and immediately not wanted.  I'd written about him a few times, and his photos and daily progress had been documented on Instagram @why_i_foster,  but somehow the anticipated flood of enquiries never materialised.  It was only after Macc was posted on Facebook and our own Instagram @hkdr_official pages that the applications started to pour in, and now we have homes for about twenty standard poodles! Of course we only have one available, so I hope that at least some of the nice homes offered will choose another dog instead.

Skippy is a 6 year-old Cavapoo

Another smaller dog that I really thought would quickly find a home is Skippy the Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles and poodle cross).  In fact there was an immediate response to my post about Skippy, but that didn't eventually come to anything, and that's really been the story ever since.  Maybe it's because Skippy is already six years old, but that's still young for a small dog.  In any case he's still currently with his family and I'm trying my hardest to move him straight into a suitable new home rather than putting him through the stress of having to come to the Homing Centre.

There are 3 more of this litter still needing fostering

We were also able to take four more of the puppies from the litter of nine that have been on standby waiting for foster homes (two are also with Lyndsay on Instagram @why_i_foster), so two are now at Whiskers N Paws, with another two in a temporary foster home.   There are still three from the litter waiting, but we can't take them in until we have more foster homes offered.

For all adoption enquiries please complete the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire, and for fostering the application form is at www. hongkongdogrescue.com/volunteer/fostering/.
