Tues 28th Feb: 37 adoptions during February

The Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre was handed over and is no more, and I expect the demolition of the entire building will take place very soon.  The final monthly adoption tally for this small Homing Centre/office is shown below, and until the new Kennedy Town premises are ready for occupation all dogs are staying in foster homes, or on Lamma.  A few have been squeezed into the "Red Dog" Centre at 21 Main Street, Ap Lei Chau, and for the time being this will also be our mailing address and contact point.  Please do not send any donations of bedding to this address as there's really no space to store anything other then essentials like food, treats and so on.

This is really proving to be a very difficult period in HKDR's history, with the move coming at the same time as so many are having to stay home and isolate, leaving us short of staff and volunteers, especially at our large Tai Po Homing Centre.  There's no way that we can just close the doors and let everyone work from home because the dogs are there, and nothing will change the fact that they need looking after.  We are urgently in need of volunteer manpower, so if you are able to help out, even if not a registered volunteer, please email eva@hongkongdogrescue.com to let her know.

We have many puppies in foster homes that you can meet by arrangement, and to start the process please complete the adoption questionnaire (www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/) as a first step.  We can then recommend those puppies that would be most suited to your home and family.  Some foster puppies have their own Instagram pages @why_i_foster and @typhoon_k_puppies, while sisters Lucy and Lorna are staying at Whiskers N Paws as full time guests, so they are available to meet any day.

Sun 27th Feb: Urgent foster home needed for Tara

Kitty is adopted, Krissy is available

Although the Whiskers N Paws puppy party couldn't take place this weekend we have many puppies in foster homes that are available for adoption.  Two of these were sisters Kitty and Krissy, until today when Kitty was chosen to go to her new forever home.  Edward is another beautiful puppy boy who was surrendered to us along with his now-adopted brothers, and unusually we know what the mother looks like.
Edward

There are so many more who are waiting to meet potential families.

Please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, or complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ if  you're ready to bring a puppy home.
Edward's mother

With many families choosing to leave Hong Kong at the moment there's a mad scramble for flights for both people and their pets, and we're getting a lot of requests for help and information.  We can't do anything directly, but I was referred to this company who have all the details about how to arrange flights and what needs to be done to prepare your dogs (or other pets). If you do choose to use  Petdex Pet Relocation please mention that you were referred by HKDR and Petdex will make a donation accordingly.

There is also a new Facebook group offering and asking for flight volunteers to help everyone trying to get their pets to join them when they leave Hong Kong.

"Hello, I just wanted you to know that I have started a group on Facebook called "Hong Kong Flight Volunteers for Pets" in the hope of helping pet owners relocate their animals, and also encourage owners to not abandon their pets during this difficult time.  We are almost up to 400 members now which I hope means there is a chance people can find solutions if something goes wrong in flight coordinations.  Many flights are being cancelled or have not been able to enter HK for a long time, so I hope this can also be a great safety network to help people connect.  Please feel free to join or tell people who might be having a hard time figuring out how to relocate with their animal.  Thank you for all the great work you do!"

Please note that we have no financial affilation with any group or company, our only aim is to try to make sure that as many dogs as possible aren't left behind.   We have previously referred people to www.internationalpettravel.com to help with pet relocation, and that recommendation still applies but you need to explore every avenue as all of these companies are overwhelmed.  Private charter flights are another option, but the group I previously mentioned who were trying to arrange a large flight to the UK failed to get the project off the ground (literally and figuratively) as costs kept escalating.

"Tara is about 20kg.  Such a special dog. Very caring and can read human emotions amazingly well".

Taking a dog to a country like Australia takes more time and planning than going to the USA, Canada, Europe or the UK, so we're asking for help for one particular ex-HKDR dog and his family.  They are having to leave Hong Kong immediately, and have made all the arrangements to take Tara with them but this takes time.  We need a foster home for Tara for six months (approximately) and the costs of food etc will be covered.  Please email me directly at sallyandersen@hongkongdogrescue.com if you can help keep this family and dog together.

Sat 26th Feb: Goodbye to Ap Lei Chau

Our time at Ap Lei Chau has come to an end, and as sad as we all are to be leaving we hope that our new location at Kennedy Town will prove to be just as happy and successful.  We won't be sharing the actual address of the Homing Centre-to-be just yet as it's still undergoing renovation and fitting-out, and there's really no reason to visit at the moment.  Of course that information will be given as soon as everything is ready for the dogs, hopefully in mid-March but possibly a bit later if there are further delays.

Our office combined with the new Red Dog Centre will take a bit longer, so in the meantime we'll be operating out of Elgin Street in Soho, and there will still be some dogs staying at the current Red Dog Centre at 21 Main Street, Ap Lei Chau, which will also be our temporary mailing address.

Even without having a small dog/puppy centre where you can visit to meet those available for adoption, we do still have many currently being looked after in foster homes, so check our website at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/ for older puppies and adult dogs, or our Facebook page Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR)  for photos, videos and information of younger puppies.

Our Tai Po Homing Centre at 6 Shek Lin Road remains open as usual, and there are hundreds of hopefuls staying there, from older puppies to seniors.  The operating hours for visitors are 10am to 6pm, but please make sure you have completed the adoption questionnaire in advance (www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/), and have made an appointment before coming.  We have to limit the number of visitors at any given time, not only because of social distancing but also because our staff are already being pushed to their limit in terms of their work duties due to few volunteers turning up these days.  There's so much that has to be done for the dogs on a daily basis so we have to have advance notice of potential adopters coming, even though they are always welcome of course.

Apart from the commitment to the daily care of all of our dogs, visits to see the vet are also something that can't be ignored, whether it's routine vaccinations and health checks, ongoing health problems or sudden emergencies.

Our Homing Centre-to-be

You can imagine that having to create three new locations from scratch is a very costly exercise, and at the same time the Tai Po Homing Centre is in dire need of repairs that can't be ignored.   The two Kennedy Town sites were taken over as empty shells, likewise the Elgin Street space which we're rushing to turn into a temporary office before we can start real renovations.  The plan for this space is to open a dog training centre, plus other things yet to be finally confirmed.
This will become our new office and Red Dog Centre

As difficult as life is for so many in Hong Kong at the moment, if you are able to help us and the dogs by donating whatever you can it would be truly appreciated.  I don't even want to think about what the final cost of all of the renovations and building work will be, but it has to be done. Please use this link to donate: https://hongkongdogrescue.com/donate/one-off-donations/

Fixing a temporary front in Elgin Street

Thank you for being part of our mission to rescue and re-home the dogs and puppies in need, and for supporting in whichever way you can.  Next year we will be celebrating HKDR's 20th Anniversary so let's keep our fingers tightly crossed that we'll be ready and able to host a big party for that special occasion!

Fri 25th Feb: Almost at the end of an era

We moved into Ap Lei Chau in 2011 and I still have the photos of the opening, including the Lion Dance, if I only knew where to find them.  That first Homing Centre at 21 Main Street is now where the Red Dog Centre is located, and we will keep those premises for the time being and use it as a mailing address, as well as a place for the "Red" dogs and other little ones who currently have nowhere else to stay.   The building is also due to be demolished to make way for a new highrise, and soon there will be nothing left of the old Ap Lei Chau.

As for the Homing Centre at 5 Wai Fung Street, it's all but closed now as the office and all the furniture was sent temporarily to Elgin Street in Soho today (and thank goodness we were lucky enough to have that option), while Phaedra the cocker spaniel moved to Lamma, and the remaining dogs are now staying at the Red Dog Centre.  Please don't come to drop off any donations as we can only accept items at our Tai Po Homing Centre at present.

We URGENTLY need a home for Goji

Once again I have to ask if anyone can offer a home to shiba inu Goji, as he will find it extremely hard to cope with the situation at the Red Dog Centre.  He doesn't get along with other dogs so it will mean he has to be confined, and for a shiba inu this is a fate worse than death.  Goji is a young dog and he's fine with people, but you could say his attitude towards other dogs is quite typical of the breed and not unusual.  If there's anyone who can give him the chance to have a meaningful life, obviously without other dogs in the home and also no children, please get in touch.  Start by completing the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ before arranging to meet him.

Sweet Bambi is adopted

I'm happy to be able to report on one adoption, that of senior dog Bambi from Tai Po.  Thenk you to his new family for giving this sweet little dog a home after all these years of waiting.

Lucy and Lorna can be met any day at WNP

I hope I'll also be able to talk about more puppy adoptions after the weekend, but please note that we won't be holding the Sunday puppy party at Whiskers N Paws, although can can meet resident puppy sisters Lucy and Lorna if you happen to turn up anyway.

We also have many older puppies, that's five months and over, now staying at our Tai Po Homing Centre, also open every day from 10am to 6pm.  Please complete the adoption questionnaire and make an appointment before coming to visit.

Thurs 24th Feb: More dogs in foster care waiting for homes

Thomas is a year old.

Happily I have an adoption to write about today, that of puppy Bingo whose foster home has become his permanent one.   We have many puppies in foster homes so please ask about meeting them, as well as smaller dogs like Thomas and Tanner who went to foster care together.  They're both lovely, small-sized and young dogs, but not suitable for homes with children as they're a bit shy.  They're loving being together, and ideally they will be adopted as a pair or go to homes where there's another dog.  At the moment we can't consider letting them go as singletons as they won't be happy on their own.  Their foster parent wrote:

"Thomas is a lovely dog.  He is a very gentle, calm and sensitive boy, who seems older than his years. He enjoys playing with other dogs and loves having attention from his human friends.
However, he does appear nervous sometimes and seems very wary of men."
Tanner

Walks very well on the lead.

"Tanner is a lovely dog (older puppy). He is quite boisterous but gentle when he needs to be.
Tanner really enjoys playing with Thomas and is usually good with other dogs and loves having attention from his human friends.
He likes to have another dog around, which helps with his confidence, as he can be quite nervous at times."

Ally and Anna moved to Tai Po

Three more small dogs moved out of the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre today, while the older puppies made the trip to Tai Po and the big Homing Centre.  Cocker spaniel Phaedra almost moved to Lamma, but shortly after being loaded onto the sampan along with brothers Bumpy and Blake (in video), there was an offer of a foster home so the boat turned around and took Phaedra back, only to find out that the foster home offer had already been withdrawn.

Once again we're left with just two dogs upstairs at Ap Lei Chau, Phaedra and shiba inu Goji, and while there have been quite a lot of enquiries about Phaedra I have to stress that she can't live in an environment where there are lots of people she doesn't know as she barks loudly at strangers.  That means no apartment blocks are suitable, or busy areas.  A home in the New Territories or one of the outlying islands would be ideal, or somewhere that has a large outdoor space for a dog to run around in.  Phaedra isn't bad or aggressive, just noisy, and we don't want her to be returned for barking at neighbours.  If she's in a place she knows, like the Homing Centre, she's quiet, especially if she has a toy, so it's not an ongoing or uncontrollable behaviour.  She's fine with other dogs, and would probably benefit from having a larger and calm friend.

Goji also needs a similar type of home and environment, his problem being that he doesn't get along with other dogs.

Tessa and MJ

Other small dogs in foster homes but available for adoption are Tessa, MJ the beagle and Binky, who left Ap Lei Chau today.  Please complete the adoption questionnaire if you're interested in adopting any of them: www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
Binky

For the time being we still have the Red Dog Centre at 21 Main Street, Ap Lei Chau, and there are some small dogs that are staying there who aren't "Red", as in behaviour.  (All photos on today's post were taken by long-term volunteer Harryn, and you can follow her on Instagram@h_dogsister).

Tiny Gyro

These are tiny poodle Gyro, who has on-off pain which requires medication, and new best friends Jumble and Beemer, two not-quite-perfect souls who have found each other and who love to play and sleep together.
Beemer has 2 1/2 working legs

Weds 23rd Feb: We're still here!

Yes, despite the fact that the whole of Hong Kong seems to have withdrawn into state of shock we're still here, and the dogs remain the focus of our days at Tai Po where we still have hundreds in need of daily care, feeding, cleaning and exercising - and homes.

As I wrote yesterday, we're in our final days at Ap Lei Chau and we'll be moving all of the stock, office furniture and equipment out on Friday, temporarily to the Elgin Street space.  Nowhere is actually ready for occupation yet, which is why we need foster homes for the dogs and puppies in the meantime, but we have to vacate the premises regardless.  We anticipate the new Kennedy Town Homing Centre to be ready by the middle of March, but given the current situation even this date could be delayed.   What will become the office and new Red Dog Centre in Kennedy Town hasn't even started renovation yet, which is why we're having to camp out in Soho for the time being.

Phaedra is still a young girl

I had really hoped that cocker spaniel Phaedra would find a last-minute home before the move, but it seems she will be heading for Lamma on Thursday, along with the two remaining "Crickets". For the latter, they will be happy to be reunited with their sisters Blanche and Brandy, and they'll enjoy the space and quiet of Lamma life.  I'm not sure how Phaedra will fit in with all of the other dogs she'll have to share her space with, and I live in hope that a last-minute email will come in offering her the ideal home.  She's actually a lovely dog, she just needs the right environment and time to settle.
Shiba inu are one of the few breeds that are happy to live outside

Even more urgent in terms of needing a home or foster is shiba inu Goji.  He doesn't get on with other dogs so he can't be sent to Lamma, and if anyone can offer a home, ideally with an outside area, please let us know today.

Also still in need of foster homes, or adoption, are bichon frise Bertie,  Binky and Beemer, and little poodle Jumble.

Bertie is 5 years old

A bit about Bertie, he is as sweet as can be and very needy for cuddles and attention, but when he's in his bed or wants some peace and quiet, he can get angry.  For that reason he can't be in a home with children, or in a small home that means he won't have his own space to retreat to when he wants to be left alone.  Iris describes Bertie as being like a little kid, always wanting attention, and some people like a dog like that.

For all enquiries about adoption, please complete the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ and for fostering please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com

Tuesday 22 February 2022

Tues 22nd Feb: A plea to all

With the rush of people trying to get out of Hong Kong now I have to ask all dog owners PLEASE make arrangements to take your four-legged family members with you if you are leaving.  HKDR, and I'm sure all of the other dog rescue organisations, are already struggling to manage as it is, so accepting even more dogs in great numbers is going to be almost impossible.   I have been sent information about flying dogs to Europe rather than direct to England, if that is where you're planning to go, and KLM is the best airline by far for handling dogs.  There's a pick-up dog taxi service that will meet the dogs at Amsterdam or Paris  and drive them all the way to your home address in the UK, Jane's Euro Pet Taxi.

Make sure your dogs have up-to-date rabies vaccinations, and you can take them to AFCD to get that done and new licenses issued on the spot for just $80 (we always recommend this anyway).   However with the current situation, the AFCD Animal Management Centres are only open for two days a week, and maybe not even that, so make sure you confirm the opening day and hours.

We're also facing the challenge of trying to move out of our Ap Lei Chau location and into new premises in Kennedy Town, but with everything that's been going on it's been very difficult getting the building materials and so on, meaning the new Homing Centre won't be ready in time.  The call for foster homes to get us through this period has resulted in many of the Ap Lei Chau dogs and puppies finding temporary care, but we still need more.  Our Foster Coordinator, Cindy, is doing an incredible job but she too is completely overwhelmed now, and it needs to be repeated that she is a volunteer, not a full time paid staff member.

This is really a challenging time for everyone in Hong Kong, and we all need to support each other if needed.  If you haven't already made arrangements for someone to look after your pets if you are unlucky enough to be sent to any sort of isolation unit, please try to do that, and make reciprocal agreements with friends or join/set up Facebook groups offering such help.  I can't imagine what will happen to any animals if there haven't been arrangements made ahead of time, as AFCD have very limited space and their facilities are hardly ideal anyway.

Mon 21st Feb: Preparing for the big move

Medium-sized Nola in her foster home

After the call for cold weather foster homes for our Tai Po dogs, we also started to move the dogs and puppies out of our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre to prepare for the relocation to Kennedy Town.  Packing up of everything else that can be moved is also underway, so anyone visiting the Homing Centre will find bags filling the entrance, and far fewer dogs than we normally have staying there.

Of the dogs that stayed upstairs Plum and Nola have gone to foster homes, while cocker spaniel Phaedra and shiba inu Goji remain.  These two dogs need a particular kind of home as they have their own behaviour challenges, so we really hope that the right adopters will come along just in time.

Phaedra

Phaedra is actually a very sweet dog who loves her toys, but she barks loudly at strangers so she can't go to a highrise complex or a busy area where she will pass lots of people when out walking.   She would love to live in the countryside where she can enjoy long walks, and swimming if possible (all spaniels love swimming).
Goji

Goji doesn't like other dogs, so people aren't the issue with him, but again it would be difficult to have a dog like Goji if you lived in a building where there were other dogs.  He would also love a home with a garden, and in a more remote area.

A lot of dogs will blossom given the kind of environment that suits them, and I'm happy to report that scruffy terrier River is really happy after moving to the Lamma Home for Small dogs.  She's loving the garden (weather permitting) and playing with her dog friends, some of whom she already knew from the Homing Centre.   Blanche and Brandy are always together, and unless we find a foster home for the two remaining "Crickets" currently still at Ap Lei Chau, Blake and Bumpy, they will also move to Lamma.

All of these dogs and many more are available for adoption, and you can find their details on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/

Now for the adoption news, starting with older puppy Lacey who won the hearts of her new family.

Lacey looking very relaxed and happy

Foster dog Winfrey will be staying with her family and flying to Canada in March.  Luckily a flight space was found so rather than needing a new home Winfrey is now adopted!

Winfrey

Hinoki has a new home confirmed

Young poodle Hinoki has also had his new home confirmed.  We had so much interest for this lovely boy, but like Phaedra and Goji he needed a particular kind of family and environment.

Trundle-now-Linus and buddy

I'd already mentioned puppy Trundle's adoption, but I wanted to share this sweet photo of him and his new friend.   Puppies get on well with pretty much anyone and anything, but it's usually the four-legged animals that come to mind.

Two other puppies were also adopted from their foster homes, Colin and Nemo.  There are so many more still waiting, so please keep checking our Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) Facebook and Instagram@hkdr_official for photos.

You can also check Instagram@why_i_foster and @typhoon_k_puppies for daily photo updates of more available puppies.

Sunday 20 February 2022

Sun 20th Feb: Thank you!

Austin looks comfortable in his foster home

Eighteen dogs were picked up from our Tai Po Homing Centre today after our call for cold-weather foster homes, with Plum also leaving from Ap Lei Chau to help over the two-plus weeks we'll be without anywhere for the smaller dogs and young puppies to stay.  Thank you to everyone who stepped up to help when asked, and please do keep sending in your offers of a temporary space for any of our dogs.  The weather is so cold and miserable, and even more so up in the hills of Tai Po.  Cindy is handling the foster enquiries for Ap Lei Chau and her email is foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, and you can also just email info@hongkongdogrescue.com with any enquiries and they will be directed to the appropriate person.

Coby at Tai Po

We were also very happy to find a foster home for new boy Coby, the dog who had to go straight to Acorn from AFCD (with a very short stop at Tai Po) because of his leg injury.   With a warm and dry home to stay in, we hope that this sweet boy will soon heal and be ready for his forever family.

You can meet Lucy and Lorna any day at WNP

Once again, and understandably, there was no photographer at the small puppy party at Whiskers N Paws, but I'm delighted to announce yet another Failed Foster family as Luther is confirmed as adopted. Luther is brother to Lucy and Lorna, the two current resident Whiskers N Paws sisters, and you can meet them any day of the week during store opening hours.

Saturday 19 February 2022

Sat 19th Feb: Cold weather foster homes needed please!

I haven't used a radiator for years, but today it was time to get heaters out of the storeroom and dust them off.  It's not so much the low temperature but the rain and damp that really makes everything feel so cold, and that's why we're asking for temporary fosters for our most vulnerable Tai Po dogs, most of whom live outside.  If you have fostered for us before and can do so again, please just head over to the Tai Po Homing Centre to pick up a dog, or email info@hongkongdogrescue.com.  I'm not asking Cindy to take on this task on top of everything else she has to deal with, because we're also in need of foster homes for the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre dogs and puppies who will be homeless for two weeks after we have to leave our currrent location at the end of February.  For those cases please email foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, thank you.

Biggles (r) has a puppy friend to play with

Two puppies were adopted today, so they won't be needing any temporary accomodation.  Biggles and Biba are siblings, and although they're not going home together they will each have another dog at home to play with.
Biba meeting her brother-to-be

Biggles and Biba are adopted

Schnauzer Lottie's foster parents joined the Failed Foster Club today, and I have to be honest and say I'd actually forgotten all about Lottie as it's been some time since she left for her then-temporary home.

Lottie when she arrived last September

Sisters Lucy and Lorna at WNP

Despite the terrible weather the Sunday puppy party at Whiskers N Paws will go ahead, albeit on a much smaller scale than usual.  Several foster puppies will be there, along with the two current resident sisters, Lucy and Lorna.  We'll be there from 2pm until 4pm only, so please get there as early as possible if you want to meet the puppies.  Of course the Homing Centres are open daily from 10am to 6pm, but again please don't come close to closing time as the staff will need to prepare the dogs for sleeping.

Friday 18 February 2022

Fri 18th Feb: Can you foster Coby?

Coby needed to go straight to the vet

The new dog from AFCD Sheung Shui came today, and although we'd been told he had a problem with one of his back legs from a previous break, it was bad enough that we had to send him straight to Acorn so Dr Tony could take a look.  There's an open wound on the joint which had pins sticking out from it, so obviously now-Coby had previous surgery to repair a break (unsuccessfully) and the site had become infected.   It's very painful for the poor boy, so he's staying in hospital at the moment so his wound can be treated, cleaned and dressed, but we'll need a foster home for him when he's OK to leave.  Coby is a young dog at only a year, and he's also very sweet.  If you can take him in until he's properly healed please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.

In only ten days we have to leave our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, and we're looking at where and how we can accommodate all of the dogs and puppies that are currently staying there.  There's going to be a couple of weeks before we can move into the new Kennedy Town space, so if you can take in a dog (or two), or a puppy (or two), again please let Cindy know.

It's probably the worst possible time to be having to move, with the cold and wet weather not helping anything, so your help and support are especially needed and appreciated.  I try as much as I can to keep my posts free of anything other than news about the dogs and puppies, but it's unfortunately impossible to ignore the current situation in Hong Kong which has created so many difficulties for everyone.  We have to keep our Homing Centres open because the dogs need to be fed and taken care of, and we will continue to operate normally as much as we can.  However we do need to ask that anyone wanting to visit to meet the dogs has first completed the adoption questionnaire and made an appointment, and we're not able to accept casual visitors or anyone who isn't coming specifically to adopt, or to collect a dog for fostering.

In foster and avilable for adoption

Please check our HKDR Facebook page Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) , or Instagram@hkdr_offical for dogs that are waiting, as well as puppies that are currently in foster homes and available for adoption.

 The questionnaire is at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Thursday 17 February 2022

Thurs 17th Feb: Some of our larger dogs in need of foster (or adoption)

Nova was 7 years old

We said goodbye to one of our Tai Po dogs today, something that's not an unusual occurrence given the large number of seniors that naturally come to the end of their lives, but Nova wasn't an old dog.  When she first arrived not that long ago and she went for her initial health check, a heart problem was detected, and that progressed without any obvious signs because she also had heartworm and her exercise was in any case kept to a minimum.  When her breathing became "open-mouthed", an indication of a serious problem, she was immediately sent to ALCVC but passed away despite the veterinary team's efforts.
Minstrel needs a home or foster

Larger adult dogs come to us all the time and we have one who really needs a foster home due to his thin coat and the very cold weather.   He's only just arrived and is really quite nervous, so a foster home would give us the opportunity to let him settle and to assess his personality, as well as keeping him warm.  He's clearly not used to sleeping on a bed because he was found shivering on the ground in the morning even though there was a bed there for him.  I have called him Minstrel and he's a year old.  If interested please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, and I would suggest a home with no children as we don't know Minstrel's character.

We're also expecting another new young dog on Friday, one we're told by AFCD has an exceptionally sweet nature but has a broken back leg that will need fixing.  We will definitely need a foster home for this boy, and it seems that he would be fine in any home, children or not.

Dido needs a home too

Also in need of a home and currently in foster care, Dido has surgery to remove the end of her tail after it was badly infected when she came to us a month ago, and she's proved herself to be a lovely girl too.   She was abandoned by her previous family so she's used to living in a home, and her current foster parent says "Dido is a calm and composed girl who is very easy to walk on leash.  She has proven to be well adapted to city life, as cars, loud noises and people don't faze her at all.  Despite being almost 7 years of age, Dido still really enjoys going out, will wait for you if you're lagging behind and will never pull ahead.

She may seem a little bit reserved at first but as soon as she sees food you're instantly her best friend.  She's good with children, and other dogs even if she's not sure how to play with them yet."

These dogs are just three of the many we have waiting for homes, foster or forever, and our Tai Po Homing Centre is still open every single day if you want to meet any of the others who are available. Remember to complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ before making an appointment to visit.

Weds 16th Feb: Who will be the lucky adopter of the "Little White" Puddle?

Every time I see one of the little-eared, pink-nosed white dogs I'm struck by how similar they are, pretty much identical in fact.  This is definitely a "breed" now, as they're so distinctive and share the same sweet naure, and here's a happy story of one such "Little White, Ted.

Hi Sally and everyone at HKDR!

This is Claudia, I'm not sure if you remember but my family adopted Ted back in late November 2020. Since then, Ted has enjoyed beaches, hiking, and many other adventures in Hong Kong. Since September 2021, Ted has made the big move with me to Boston for a new job, and seeing all the stories of people leaving their dogs behind has made me sad so I wanted to just offer help to anyone who is looking to relocate to the US East Coast and maybe even share my experience with them. Hopefully, it might inspire some people to think twice before surrendering their pets...

In any case, Ted has been having the time of his life in Boston. He's experienced his first snowstorm, gone on the subway to explore the city, running after turkeys (which run wild here), and even been on a ski trip! Please enjoy some of the photos and I hope many other HKDR dogs will get to experience what he has ❤️

Puddle-Loki at WNP in January

We do have one of these "Little White" puppies still waiting for a home, so if you want to become the lucky adopter of Puddle, aka Loki, please complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

With many puppies in foster homes at the moment, and the puppy sessions at Whiskers N Paws being scaled down quite a bit, we're encouraging potential adopters to keep checking our HKDR Facebook page for photos and information about available puppies, especially those that are ready for adoption or coming up to that magic age (minimum eight weeks).

Meet these puppies at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre

Our two Homing Centres continue to stay open every day as the dogs and puppies need to be fed and walked and the premises properly cleaned, so you can still visit to meet potential family members by appointment.  Please start by completing the adoption questionnaire so we can let you know if we have what you're looking for, and where to go to meet suitable matches.

Just as a reminder, we will soon be closing our Homing Centre at Ap Lei Chau (sadly) and moving to a new location in Kennedy Town.  However, since the new space won't be completed by the end of February when we have to vacate our current Homing Centre, there will be a couple of weeks when we'll be camping in a temporary place, probably Elgin Street in Soho. We would prefer to send as many dogs and puppies to foster homes as possible for this in-between period, so if you can take in a temporary boarder please let Cindy know by emailing foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.
