Sun 31st Oct: 55 Reasons to be happy

Jolie looks very happy

You must know that nothing makes me happier than to see the larger-sized adults from Tai Po being chosen, and thanks to their glowing references from the Typhoon Foster homes there were two such adoptions today.  One was Jolie and the other Hershey, both lovely dogs and fully deserving of a happy life and family home.  Thank you to their adopters for giving them this chance.
Hershey is also adopted

Although not having made the actual move yet, border collie Shep will also have his adoption formalised after time spent in a wonderful foster home and a successful adoption interview.  Who knows what his story is, as he was found wandering in Ap Lei Chau, and when traced his registered owner said he gave the dog away years ago.  Shep's adoption won't be counted in the October total (see below) but it will start November off nicely.

Raisin is one of the "R" group

Benjamin Po was the volunteer photographer at Whiskers N Paws today, and even though it was quiet (as expected due to it being Halloween) the puppies still had a great time Puppy Adoption Day 31st Oct 2021.  There were familiar faces as well as several new ones, including very pretty Raisin and Tate, both of whom are staying at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre.

 .

Tate came with the "T" group

Charlie found his forever family

One of the dogs adopted from Ap Lei Chau had been with us for a while, comparatively at least, but today was Charlie's big moment as he was chosen to join his new family.

Also leaving was Rex, one of the "R" intake and a very sweet boy.

Rex was chosen today

It was also the second day of the Halloween event at the Sai Wan Ho Waterfront Park, and although I don't have any photos to share yet I'm sure it was a great day out for many families and their dogs.

With Halloween well and truly over we can start to look forward to Christmas and the New Year, so as an early suggestion for useful gifts for everyone....

Sat 30th Oct: A not-so-scary Saturday

Dogs are welcome of course!

There was a great turnout for the Soho East Halloween event at the Sai Wan Ho Waterfront Park, and it continues on Sunday if you want to go along to see what's happening there.

Another lucky (and lovely) Typhoon Foster dog had his permanent status confirmed, and this time Cheerio had to prove that he would get along with both the resident dog and the cat.  Everything has gone very smoothly, and Cheerio even shares a bed with the cat on occasion.

I think the cat took the photo

Two more small dogs left our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre today, namely Tim and Tegan, and again you can see their mini size in the adoption photos.

Little Tegan heading home

There are still a lot of smaller dogs available, but regardless of numbers the same adoption criteria apply.  Unfortunately in many cases the homes that are offered don't take into consideration the needs of a dog beyond absolute basics, and in such situations the Homing Centre can offer a much happier life.  We don't operate on an "any home is better than none" basis, because many of our dogs came from such poor situations to start with and we don't plan on sending them to another.  If you don't have the time to take care of a dog properly, then please don't even think of having one.  You can always volunteer and spend as much time as you want in the company of dogs without the full time commitment of having one at home.
Tim was a popular boy

On a final good news note, ex-HKDR lost Lantau dog May (as shared on our HKDR Facebook page) found her way home again after having been missing for some days.  She was thin but otherwise unharmed, and I suspect that she got stuck somehow and maybe only managed to escape once she had lost some weight and could wriggle free.  Anyway, she's home and safe now.

Fri 29th Oct: All dogs are special

Lucky little Tara

As I wrote yesterday, this Halloween weekend is going to be a busy one in several ways, and one of those is the potential adopters that have already arranged to visit the Homing Centres to meet their possible new family members.  This is particularly true for the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, and several would-be adopters have already been to meet the dogs and are now deciding on who they will want to take home.  It's difficult to show the sizes of the dogs just from a photo, but maybe this adoption photo of Tara will give you a better idea.  You can see how small she is, and she's not a puppy.  You can see Tara and the other remaining "T" intake dogs in these grid photos, with only Tod being more medium than small.  Please check yesterday's post for photos of the "R" intake small dogs.

After I wrote about Radish yesterday and his videos were later posted on Facebook, there's also a lot of interest in him, so please remember if you're looking for a dog like Radish there are many others who are just as lovely.  We know that people get stuck on a certain dog and are so disappointed when they find it's already been adopted, that they won't even look at any others.  As someone who lives with many dogs, as I'm sure you know, I can tell you that they are all special in their own way and every single one of them has their own individual personality and character.   Giving any dog a chance and learning about them, forming a relationship and a bond of trust, is special no matter who the dog is or what they look like.

Big Hudson and his small friend

One special dog who proved what I just wrote is absolutely true is Typhoon Foster dog Hudson,  adopted by his now-forever family after fitting in so well.  I love when this happens, but it shouldn't come as a surprise that almost all dogs are easy and loving companions when they're given the chance to show it.

The weekend is also when the street party is taking place at the Sai Wan Ho Waterfront Park over both days, and the Whiskers N Paws puppy party as always on Sunday, 2pm to 4pm.

We also have some puppies in need of foster care after recovering from illness, so if you can help with this please let Cindy know by emailing foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.  The puppies will need to have vet check-ups on Hong Kong Island, so please bear that in mind.

Thurs 28th Oct: A busy weekend coming up

Radish is a sweet young boy

I just want to correct a mistake a made about new Tai Po "girl" Radish, because he's a boy! Regardless of that little error nothing else has changed as he is a beautiful, sweet and playful young dog, so hurry over if you want to meet him, and the other two new arrivals Liz and Pearl, both of whom are still female!

I asked Eagle, who's the Ap Lei Chau staff member usually in charge of taking the photos of the dogs, to create a new grid showing them with bodies rather than just heads.  I know it's very hard to guess at what a dog looks like when you can't see all of it, and really even the full photos don't give an indication of size or personality.  Now that the dogs have all settled and are no longer wondering where they are, we're seeing those initially shy ones coming out and playing, like the two beautiful terrier types Ruby and River.

So far there's only the full body grids for the "R" group completed, and the "T" intake will be shared soon.

I know the weekend is going to be busy again because we already have adoption interviews arranged, so if you don't want to miss this opportunity please start by completing the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

This Sunday is Halloween, and it's unusual for the actual day to coincide with a weekend so make the most of it by heading over to Sai Wan Ho Waterfront Park for the street party that's taking place over Saturday and Sunday, with workshops (Cantonese only)  and other happenings, and all dog-friendly of course.  You can find all the details on Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR)

Weds 27th Oct: The babies are growing fast

While the large number of new dogs are settling in at both of the Homing Centres, it's time to remind you about all of the baby puppies that were rescued during the recent typhoon.  You can follow their progress on Instagram @typhoon_k_puppies and @why_i_foster to see how puppies grow and develop. It happens so fast as they move from being completely helpless newborns to crawling, then stumbling around, to playing, running and wrestling all within the space of a few weeks.  By two months of age they're ready to be adopted, so if you want to reserve any of them now you can do so by emailing Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, and if you want to adopt a pair you can take them home at any time.

Liz

The three new dogs that spent the whole of Tuesday being driven from here to there and back again are all beautiful and medium-sized, and now that they've got names you can ask for them specifically.  Remember to start by completing the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questonnaire/
Pearl

Of course there's a lot of interest in the small dogs at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre with potential adopters coming to meet them every day and many enquiries by email.  Due to the large number of questionnaires coming in I do have to ask again that you wait to receive a reply before coming to the Homing Centre.

Tues 26th Oct: A very long day for 3 new arrivals

In addition to the extra work involved in physically taking care of so many new dogs, meaning the feeding, cleaning, walking and getting them all to the vet, I'm also spending hours replying to the many adoption enquiries. I try to respond to all of them as quickly as I can, but there are other things that need to be done too, like walking and feeding my Lamma dogs and writing this blog for a start.  Please be patient if you're waiting for a reply to your adoption questionnaire, especially if it's in Chinese and I have to forward to the Homing Centre team to handle.  They also have very little time to spare.

This one's a girl

The fuzzy look is always popular

Three new dogs turned up unexpectedly today, and although they were dropped off at the Tai Po Homing Centre they were immediately sent over to Ap Lei Chau.  However, while not exactly large dogs they were too big to be with all of the little ones at Ap Lei Chau, so after having been to AFCD for licensing and then to ALCVC (vet clinic) for a check and vaccination, the poor things were driven back to Tai Po.  That meant quite a day for them, so I hope they're more settled now.   One of them has the very popular fuzzy kind of coat which is good for allergy sufferers, so although they don't have names yet if you're interested you can start by completing the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
The stay at Ap Lei Chau was brief

Talia is now Lollie

Two lucky dogs left Ap Lei Chau today, one of them a very popular choice judging from the number of enquiries I received about her.  Talia is now Lollie, and I'm sure she's going to be very much loved.
Cricket in her new home

So too is little Cricket, who also had another potential home to go to once the adopter was freed from quarantine so her future was bright either way.

Joining the three new dogs heading back up to Tai Po at the end of the day, funny puppy Ricky also moved from the small Homing Centre to be with the big dogs.   His playfulness was too much for the little adults and we felt he'd enjoy being with other who wouldn't mind his non-stop games.

Monday 25 October 2021

Mon 25th Oct: The "T" intake are already leaving

I'll start by sharing the headshots of the newly arrived dogs again, but this time with names included.  Some have already been adopted, and others who were first thought to be puppies but ended up just being very small adults, are also not shown, although there were only four of them anyway.   You can't tell from just seeing their faces how large or small the dogs are, but for the most part they're tiny, small or medium sized, and there's definitely a family theme with the very cute underbite in many of them.  Everyone is asking where the dogs came from and if they're from a breeder (unlikely, as they all mixed breeds apart from the Frenchie), and the simple answer is we have absolutely no idea.  We can say for sure that some of the female dogs have had puppies, and as mentioned there are definitely family groups, especially with the "R" intake that came last Friday, but I can't imagine there's any money to be made from selling these dogs, however lovely we think they are.

This group are now the "T" dogs, and here's a video of tiny Taryn, one of those first assumed to be a puppy until her teeth said otherwise.  I think she's completely adorable with her funny little underbite.

Riva going home

All of the schnauzer-poodle-terrier family from the "R" intake have now been adopted as the last of them, Riva, was adopted today.
Tisha was a popular girl

The "T" adoptions started with Tisha, a very popular puppy based on the number of enquiries I had about her, followed by Tatum, then Talia (photo to follow).

Tatum

Odin is having a great time in his new home

Just because we have so many new dogs arriving, it doesn't mean we have lost interest in others and especially the puppies.  Gorgeous Odin was chosen today, and he's already settled in nicely with the resident dog in the home.  It's always so much easier for any puppy to adapt when there's a built-in friend willing to play.
Tizzy covered herself up

I also wanted to share this photo I took of the newly-arrived Frenchie, Tizzy.  She's being kept separated because she has really bad skin on her back legs, and she made us all laugh because she used her blanket to cover herself, not just once but repeatedly.  She came out from underneath to check on what was going on if there was any activity, then pulled the blanket back over her once it was over.

Ryand with Terry

Over at Tai Po, senior dog Ryan was chosen by volunteer and adopter of many lucky older dogs, Terry.  I've lost count of how many dogs have moved from Tai Po to Terry's retirement home, and when one of them reaches the end of their lives, as they do of course, then it makes space for another.  Thank you Terry!

Sun 24th Oct: An unexpected delivery

This one would be mine

I really don't know where to start, as there was so much happening today that I'll have to keep everything as brief as possible. We weren't expecting the new group of dogs to arrive until Monday at the earliest, so it was a total surprise to get the message that they were on the way to Sai Kung.  Our driver Ming was already heading to Whiskers N Paws with foster puppy Ronnie in the van, so he had to do a quick turnaround after dropping Ronnie and the other puppies off, and head straight back to collect the new arrivals.  Catherine (Catherine's Puppies) had already been sending me photos so I had some idea of what to expect, and the dogs and puppies are a complete mix this time round.  You can take a look at the video of the dogs arriving to get an idea: https://www.facebook.com/hkdogrescue/videos/301894391493858
All the adults, no names yet

There are so many lovely little, and not so little, faces that I wouldn't know who to choose, so I would have to adopt at least a pair.

The new puppies

Rosie

While all of this was going on of course the Homing Centre team were busy with adoptions, and these are the lucky dogs that went home today: Rain, Russell, Rory, Rylie, Riddle, Rosie and Romany, with ex-breeder shiba inu Skippy (the one with the neurological bobbing) going to a foster home.
Riddle

Rylie

Rodger So was the volunteer photographer at the Whiskers N Paws puppy party, and as always his photos are amazing  Puppy Adoption Day 24th Oct 2021, with unfortunately no on-site adoptions to record this week.

Saturday 23 October 2021

Sat 23rd Oct: Quite a day!

Reggie (l) and Ronnie

I'm going to start by listing the foster puppies that found homes without having had to come back to the Homing Centre or attend the Sunday Whiskers N Paws party. In most cases they were taken for fostering as soon as they arrived, so my memory of them will be in the form of a photo taken at that time, and maybe updates from time to time.  So here are the lucky puppies: Jack and Jill (going to a new home together), as are Nettie and Nino.  Nessa (same litter as the other two "N" pups), Alison and Reggie have to leave their siblings behind to strike out on their own, and hopefully their other halves will be also chosen soon.   (Ronnie and Nancy will be at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday if anyone would like to meet them). Big thanks to the foster parents for a wonderful job done, and to the adopters for offering forever homes to these little orphans.
Last pup Nancy will be at Whiskers N Paws

Ruskin was the first to leave

As anticipated it was non-stop at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, and there were several adoptions, with other families wanting to come back again on Sunday with their own dogs or children/spouses to have a second meeting.  I have to admit I would find it hard to choose just one as I wanted to take home a whole group of them myself on Friday!
I loved Rubix too!

Rocco was a popular boy today

It was also quite busy at the big Tai Po Homing Centre with several dogs under consideration, or in trial homes with resident dogs or cats that have to approve.  I love posting adoption news for these larger adults as it's so much harder to find homes for big dogs than the smaller ones.

As a reminder please complete the adoption questionnaire in advance of any visit to meet the dogs or puppies.  Once again we expect to be very busy at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre as we already have several families either coming back or visiting for the first time, so please wait for a reply to the questionnaire (and check your Spam inbox if you're waiting).  I will try to respond immediately if possible.  The questionnaire can be found at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
