Mon 31st Oct: 42 out, 47 in

Super-sweet Larissa out of costume

I was waiting for the October adoption figure before writing today's post, and I'm happy to say that forty two dogs and puppies won the equivalent of life's lottery this month.  However, once again, the intake is higher than the number of those leaving, meaning a constant turnover and never a reduction, no matter how high the adoption rate seems.   There are always literally hundreds of dogs still waiting to be chosen, particularly at our Tai Po Homing Centre.  Many of them are perfect in every way, like our Halloween pair whose photo I shared yesterday, Jared and Larissa.   All they need is a home so they can prove it.

For now, here are the names of those lucky forty two:

Sun 30th Oct: Our not-scary Halloween dogs Larissa and Jared

Big "puppy" Klondike joined the party at WNP today

Today's photographer at the Whiskers N Paws Puppy Party was Benjamin Po, and you can see how lovely all of the hopefuls are  Puppy Adoption Day 30th Oct 2022.

There was an additional "puppy" joining the Halloween celebration today, as Klondike had been sent from our Tai Po Homing Centre for a much-needed grooming session and he looked very handsome once it was done.  Sadly Klondike had been badly abused as a puppy and young adult so he has some trust issues, and although he loves our driver Ming and is like a teddy bear with him, we know that we would have to be careful about finding Klondike a suitable forever home.   Nevertheless, knowing that he is so gentle with Ming shows us that anything is possible, and in the meantime Klondike enjoys sharing his enclosure with his girlfriend, German shepherd Sadie.  As I'm sure you know, a home with HKDR means a home for life if needed.

Pom Iona was adopted today

Iona was the lucky Kennedy Town dog today, and I'm sure she's going to have a lovely life to look forward to after the awful years as a breeder dog.

These two are not remotely scary!

The Halloween events at Soho East was a big success, with our Ambassador Dogs Larissa and Jared behaving like the superstars they are every day.  These two dogs are the easiest and friendliest, and would suit any home looking for a sweet family member.   Big thanks to our volunteers Samson, Jaqueline and Phoebe for manning our HKDR booth and taking care of the dogs, as well as the many enquiries.

If you would like to offer a forever home to any of our dogs and puppies, please start by completing the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Sat 29th Oct: It's always an adoption day at HKDR

Lucky Harper is given a second chance

News of an adoption from our Tai Po Homing Centre is always the best, and today it was Harper who left to start her new life.  Many thanks to Harper's new family, and to everyone else who has chosen to give a larger adult, usually mixed breed, a second chance in life.   It's never the dog's fault that they have ended up homeless, and  it's especially sad when dogs come to us having spent their whole lives up to that point trusting their humans and believing that they will always be part of the family.  We do what we can to make their lives with us the best possible, but nothing beats a real home.
Ivory is the one the left

Of course the smaller dogs are much easier to re-home, or in the case of the ex-breeder poodles and poms to find them their first ever home, and two more left our Kennedy Town North Street Centre today.  Ivory was first, with Inky leaving later.   I should remind everyone who has asked about these dogs that they're six years old and not in perfect condition, but they are very sweet and the physical issues are all fixable.

Inky going home

It's probably a busy weekend for lots of you with Halloween parties and events to go to, but for all of us at HKDR it's business as usual, with the Whiskers N Paws Puppy Party taking place on Sunday afternoon and the Homing Centres at Kennedy Town and Tai Po open from 10am to 6pm.  Please be sure to complete the adoption questionnaire before coming to visit: www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Fri 28th Aug: That's enough about poodles, let's talk about puppies again

I'm not going to talk about the poodles today as they've had their share of publicity and two have already been chosen.  Now it's just a case of going through all of the enquiries still coming in, and anticipating the potential adopters that have already made arrangements to visit.

Skittle left Elgin Street today

I met up with someone from RTHK at Elgin Street today to record a short segment for an upcoming programme, and at the same time was able to spend some time with Sparky and Smithy, the only two remaining dogs after Skittle's adoption.  They're both lovely, very friendly and happy boys, even if they're quite different in looks and body shape. Sparky is young, fit and lean, while Smithy is rather round and a lot smaller.  After the RTHK recording had finished, the two dogs were driven over to the Kennedy Town Homing Centre where they'll be staying now until they're adopted.
Smithy would be great with children

We have so many puppies also staying at Kennedy Town so there's plenty of potential friends for Sparky to play with, and he'll also be able to enjoy the walks along the waterfront.  That's one of the downsides of the HKDR@Elgin space, as Soho and the narrow streets aren't great for dog walking.

Roland should be called Ginger

I also want to give a mention to Roland, a doglet who's been in an amazing foster home for a long time while waiting for his forever family.  His foster parents have been busy training Roland to do far more than just the basic "sit" and "stay" and you can see how brilliant he is in this video: https://www.facebook.com/hkdogrescue/videos/1506188949847790.  How could you not want such a clever dog?   Roland is a regular at the Sunday Puppy Parties at Whiskers N Paws, even if he's not able to make it every weekend, so if you'd like to meet him in person please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.

Thurs 27th Oct: Sorting out the new arrivals

I shared the photos of the new small dogs on Facebook yesterday, and we have already had a big response with lots of adoption interest.  I do need to mention, however, that these poms and poodles aren't puppies or even particularly young adults, although six years is still quite young for small breeds.  It's also important to bear in mind that breeder dogs are kept in cages and don't live a normal home life, so they will have no idea about toilet training, or anything else come to that.

What I can say is that they are all very sweet, and with the help of our very experienced trainer, Cactus, to answer any questions, the training side of things is easy.  The dogs will be seeing a vet on Friday for a health check and vaccinations, but today the poodles got a much-needed wash and grooming, and a shave in the case of India whose coat was completely matted.

India needed a total shave

In addition to the return of senior poodle lady Bailey, we also took in an even older poodle today.  Bee is fifteen, even if she doesn't look it.   It would be lovely to see Bee and Bailey in homes rather than our small Ap Lei Chau Centre.

Bee

The small dogs are easily adopted as long as they don't have behaviour issues, and I fully expect that most of these newbies will have no trouble finding homes either.  It's the larger sized dogs and puppies that have to rely on luck and timing, so for all of those puppies who also arrived from AFCD today, I can only hope that their time comes soon as well.  The older boy at seven months was sent to our Tai Po Homing Centre, and I think he's gorgeous.  Liam is also very friendly and ready to move to a new home any time.

Liam is at our Tai Po Homing Centre

Wishing the new puppies lot of luck

I almost forgot to mention that puppy Skittle was adopted today from our HKDR@Elgin centre, and Sparky and Smithy will be moving to Kennedy Town on Friday.  The timing is perfect for Sparky especially, because he will miss his puppy friend a lot, and having lots of new friends to play with at Kennedy Town will be the best medicine for him.

Sparky loves having a friend

I'm sure you don't need to be reminded that this Sunday is (almost) Halloween and there's lots going on to celebrate.  On both Saturday and Sunday we'll be at Soho East, and of course there's the Puppy Party at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday, with the store as always decorated from floor to ceiling with all manner of Halloween delights.

Weds 26th Oct: Still on the subject of poodles

Lottie when she came to us

Another foster poodle has her full time status confirmed today, and that was Lottie.   Meanwhile poor little Bailey will have to come back from her foster home after the resident poodle turned out to be very resentful of having an intruder turn up, and I agreed that returning Bailey would be the best option for her own sake.   If anyone can offer her another chance, she's the sweetest old lady who only wants love and attention.
Sweet old lady Bailey

We also got a message from AFCD Sheung Shui about five poodles and three poms being available for re-homing, all six years old and female, and all ex-breeder dogs.  I'm sure I don't need to repeat what I have said many times about breeders, and seeing the photos only reinforced my opinion.  I also know that it won't be long before these little dogs are going to look completely different, and now they have a whole new life to look forward to.  They're all very sweet natured too (we're told), and from the photos they also appear to be very small.  We can't share the AFCD photos but please check in again for an update later, and in the meantime I have already allocated "I" names in readiness for the dogs' arrival. As always, if you're interested in adopting please start by completing the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Moose was picked up from Kennedy Town, his "cone of shame" being because he somehow cut his paw so will need to be prevented from licking it for a while.

His space will quickly be filled by more puppies coming from AFCD with the poodles and pomeranians, six of them to be exact, with one older one heading for our Tai Po Homing Centre.

Tuesday 25 October 2022

Tues 25th Oct: What's up WhatsApp?

It was one of those "nothing happening" days today, or at least in terms of interesting things to write about since in reality there's never a day that isn't busy.  There are always dogs and puppies that need to see a vet, either for tests and diagnosis, surgery or vaccinations, so the van is always coming or going, especially since we have four locations on Hong Kong Island and the Tai Po Homing Centre, with three different vet clinics that we regularly use.  The fact that WhatsApp was down for a few hours didn't help, even though it was quite a relief when I realised it wasn't just my phone that was refusing to work.  When I think back to the early days of HKDR when there was no such thing as a Smartphone and no social media, I wonder how we ever managed to contact potential adopters or keep in touch with anyone.  Remembering that my dog rescue efforts started long before HKDR was even an idea, let alone a reality, I used to place ads in HK Dollarsaver, the four-page publication that was, I believe, the only English language opportunity to buy or sell directly.

Two more puppies, Carla and Coral, were returned from their foster home to join the many others at our Kennedy Town Homing Centre.   You can see the list of available puppies below, and there's a lot of them!
Sparky

On Friday we'll also be sending the three dogs still remaining at HKDR@Elgin to our Kennedy Town Centre, not only to give Cam a break but also to allow puppy Skittle and young adult Sparky to meet and play with other dogs and puppies.

Skittle should have been adopted by now but he's become Sparky's only friend and playmate. With so many other puppies at Kennedy Town to take his place, Sparky won't be lonely when Skittle leaves.

Skittle is very playful

Mon 24th Oct: Oldie but goodie

Bailey

Continuing the poodle theme, little old lady poodle Bailey was picked up today to see how she gets along with the other two small dogs in the home, just in time to make space for an even older poodle to arrive.  The new one is fifteen years old, and like Bailey the reasons for her surrender are perfectly understandable, not at all because she's being heartlessly thrown out.  It's also lovely to know that there are people willing to take home the oldies, and Bailey is so sweet she'll be a very easy house guest.

In addition to the regular Whiskers N Paws puppy party this Sunday, there's another opportunity to enjoy Halloween over the weekend at Soho East. We'll be there too, and you can read full details of the event and what's happening  here https://bit.ly/3fRb2Z5

Some of these puppies have found homes

We also have a Homing Centre full of puppies at Kennedy Town, Shop 4 Brilliant Court, Sai Hong Lane, 28 Praya Kennedy Town, open every single day from 10am to 6pm.

Sun 23rd Oct: Poodle day! and more

Samuel's on the right

It was poodle day today, with Samuel dropping by to have his adoption paperwork completed and photo taken, while Wally's adoption was confirmed by his foster home (he was the one who had tick fever).
Wally's bedtime story

Also joining the Failed Foster Club, long-term foster poodle Hazel is staying for ever, and big thanks too to her now-family for covering the large vet bills that were incurred due to Hazel's many health issues.

This was Hazel in January

Another poodle(ish) who's in a foster home may also be staying, but again he came to us with a heart problem that will need lifelong monitoring and medication, so that's something that has to be considered. One thing's for sure, and that's that Hendrix is a very sweet boy and loved by his foster parents.

Soko was almost in-and-out

As I mentioned yesterday, Soko the recently-arrived shiba puppy has found his new home after having been found wandering as a stray, without a microchip, and brought to us. Lucky Soko.

I want to use this photo of Moose again

There were lots of visitors today, many first time lookers wanting to meet some of the puppies, and others who have been before and were returning to make their choice.  Today it was decision day and Moose was the lucky puppy, while at Whiskers N Paws it was Tabitha who went home.  Both are lovely puppies  who I'm sure will make great family members.

Tabitha was one of the many puppies whose lack of a forever home was a mystery to us because not only is she very pretty and only medium sized, she's also very sweet natured.  So many people ask about dogs or puppies with these exact attributes, yet Tabitha went unnoticed every Sunday, until now.  For those of you who are still looking for that perfect match, maybe he or she is right there waiting for you too. Please take a look at the photos taken by regular Sunday volunteer Rodger So to see if "the one" is there  Puppy Adoption Day 23rd Oct 2022

Jayden needs a new home please

I have a photo now of the new arrival at our Tai Po Homing Centre, a very sweet dog who has been given the name of Jayden.  Please remember his face and name if you're looking for a new family member who was living in a home before being so cruelly thrown out when a baby arrived.

Sat 22nd Oct: The shy ones

Smithy is one of the Elgin Street residents

The smaller dogs tend to arrive in groups and are quickly adopted, so as I wrote yesterday there are just two adults now staying at our HKDR@Elgin location, as well as puppy Skittle who has become Sparky's emotional support.  Smithy is a bit older (and fatter), but he's a very sweet boy who loves tummy tickles more than anything else.

Terrier type Scout is staying at our Kennedy Town Centre, and like many terriers (terrors) Scout is a mix of adorable and affectionate along with a touch of naughty.  Some of you who have known me for a while will remember a little dog I took home from our Pokfulam Kennels due to the fact that he had decided I was his and he was mine, and nothing would change his mind. After a failed adoption and a couple of bites, Murphy joined me on Lamma and became my very close companion until he died at the age of eighteen.  He retained that little bit of devil to the end, so for that reason we have to say that Scout isn't really suitable for a family with children.  However he will be a perfect choice for anyone looking for a loyal friend and partner is everything.

Two puppies were chosen today, although baby Peter will have to wait a couple of weeks before being able to leave his siblings because he's still too young at the moment.

Soko

Soko is the other lucky puppy, albeit an older one at ten months, and he'll be heading off to his new home on Sunday after a very short time staying at our Kennedy Town Centre.  Like terriers, shibas can be challenging so we don't like to home them with young children, and Soko's new home is a perfect fit.

Henry on Lamma

We have several small-sized puppies, but unfortunately for them they are all quite shy with strangers, even if they are all happy after the visitors have left. It's frustrating to have so many potential adopters coming to meet puppies like Aaron, and to be put off by his timid behaviour, because so many puppies and adults take time to warm up.

I ended up taking little Henry to Lamma after he always became very nervous during adoption interviews, but I feel bad for him because he's actually an incredibly sweet and affectionate little dog.  After just a couple of days at the Lamma Home for Small Dogs, he's happy and outgoing and begging to be scratched and petted.  He doesn't like busy streets and traffic, so an environment like Lamma is ideal, but there are many other places that would also suit Henry.

River is in the middle of the group

Another very lovely dog staying at the Lamma House for Small dogs is terrier River, and it took her many months to emerge from under the sofa when people were around.  She loved her dog friends, especially Rumble, but it's only recently that she's finally realised that nobody is going to hurt her and that the humans she meets are actually quite nice (especially if they offer treats).  It's a shame knowing that River will probably never find her own home because not many people are prepared to wait months to be accepted, and River also needs to be with another dog and to live in a quite environment with a garden (she has still never been brave enough to go out for a walk).

All of the Lamma small dogs shown in the photo are available for adoption, but they're all going to need a lot of time to adjust to a new home, as well as all needing to have another dog friend (and no children around).

For details of all of our dogs-in-waiting, please visit our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/

Fri 21st Oct: Time for a new puppy list

It's time for the puppy list again (below) and you can click on the blue link to see the photos, hopefully up to date but puppies grow so fast it's hard to keep up.  There are lots of photos too from last Sunday's Whiskers N Paws Puppy Party  Puppy Adoption Day 16th Oct 2022, taking place again this weekend of course from 2pm to 4pm.

There's just one puppy left at our HKDR@Elgin location in Soho, and although I had said we might be moving her to Kennedy Town for the weekend it seems she and Sparky have become best playmates so it would be a shame to separate them.  Sparky has been very needy for company and didn't like to be alone before Skittle was put together with him, and it's made such a huge difference to his behaviour.  Now we're hoping that they can be adopted as a pair, or Sparky can at least go to a home where there is another dog that he can bond with. Watch the video to see how sweet these two are.

All of the locations are open from 10am to 7pm, so you can visit any of the dogs at any time once you have completed the adoption questionnaire and have received a reply. For the puppies in foster homes please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com to arrange a meeting.

The questionnaire is at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
