Thurs 7th Oct: Preparing for a wet and windy weekend

I was in preparation mode today for the possible typhoon at the weekend, and that means making sure I have everything necessary for myself and the dogs, and hoping that there are no veterinary emergencies.  Once the T3 signal goes up there's no getting over to Hong Kong Island, and at the time of writing that's already happened, although thankfully it doesn't seem that it's going to get any worse.  I live in dread of another severe typhoon like Mangkhut which devastated everything round me except the actual house, and the memory of that event will stay with me for ever.

Lizzie and Lula on Sunday

Perhaps because of the weather it was a quiet day as far as visitors were concerned so I don't have any adoptions to write about, although one of the three gorgeous sisters staying as full time guests at Whiskers N Paws had her adoption confirmed on paper and she'll be heading off to her new home on Saturday, when I'll share which one of the three is is.

Everyone knows about the challenges of moving to another country and taking dogs along, but it's not impossible, even if it's more difficult than it has been in the past. I'm just talking to the adopter of one of our puppies, now a young adult, who's about to fly to England via Brussels (Belgium) and then travel on via a pet taxi service.  Apparently there are a few such companies and I can share the one given to me if requested, but I'm sure a Google search will bring up others. I've also been given the name of a Bangkok-based company called Action for Dogs (contact@actionfordogs.com) that will help arrange flights and flight volunteers to the UK.  Again please do your own reseach for alternatives, but it's reassuring to know that such options are available if you need help.   Leaving a dog behind is the very last thing anyone should be contemplating, especially if thinking that simply handing the dog over to an animal rescue organisation is a reasonable solution.

The last quarter of the year is traditionally the fundraising season, but the days of the ever-popular Peak to Fong and the annual Gala Dinner seem like dim memories now.  It's a sad fact that as more dogs are in need of help, meaning more money is also required to take care of them all, we haven't been able to benefit from these two major events, and that's a big hole in the income needed to run HKDR.

Please note it's the humans who dress up, not the dogs

However all is not lost as we've been lucky to have been included in smaller fundraising events such as this upcoming Halloween party "offering an afternoon of fun, pizza and dogs to raise money for the HKDR!
