Two very lovely girl puppies joined the already-large group of youngsters at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, and they're now Poppy and Pudsey in case you want to meet them. As always please start by completing the adoption questionnaire as a first step, and with as much detail as possible: www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
Erin's useless leg was removed |
While little Erin was having her leg amputated today, a possibility I mentioned yesterday, another one of the group of nine that came to us at the beginning of the month was adopted. With Edie now gone, Erin is the last of that particular group and it brings the number of small dogs available back down to very few. By the way, if you can foster Erin during her recovery period please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, bearing in mind that she'll have to go back to Acorn for a check-up and stitch removal.
Edie going home |
Pipkin reminds me of Lamma dog Banjo |
Pipkin is one of those remaining as he's a bit shy and not a fan of strangers wanting to pet him, and there's still Phaedra the cocker spaniel who's been staying at the ALCVC hospital because we didn't have the space for her at the Homing Centre. Now it's time to bring her over and get her properly socialised, although in her case as with the shiba inu we have available, we would never home her to a family with children.
Cocker spaniels in general can be snappy with strangers, a trait that unfortunately has become the norm thanks to poor breeding, while the shiba inu is a hunting breed not meant to be family pets, especially in small Hong Kong apartments. Just like cocker spaniels, who used to be a popular breed here until they went out of favour a few years ago, I suspect the shiba inu will also be taken over by something else once more people realise that they're not the cuddly toys they expected when they bought them as puppies.
Timmy |
As always I look at the lovely mixed breeds we have available and am saddened by the fact that these easy, loving, funny and beautiful dogs may never be chosen because they don't have a specific breed name attached. Going through the list of names and photos shared on our HKDR Facebook page Tai Po Available Dogs (Sept 2021) I can see so many that would make fantastic family members, including sweet Timmy for example https://hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/timmy/. Why is he still with us when he should be in a home?
