Mon 26th Feb: Little and large

Happy Hercules
I'd received a message on Sunday about two dogs that needed help, an Alaskan malamute and a bichon frise, both of whom had been bought from pet shops and subsequently completely neglected.  They lived outside with no shelter, had never been vaccinated, licensed or walked, and of course I assumed quite rightly that they had never had any heartworm protection.  I agreed to take them and said they could be brought to our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre today so I could take both to Acorn before the malamute, now Hercules, moved up to  Tai Po.  I guessed that his temperament was good because he had been living with the small dog, now Popcorn, and I was right, he's an absolute sweetheart, if a very smelly and dirty one.  Hercules really needs a makeover, as does Popcorn, but while we can handle washing and grooming small dogs we need to send the giant hairy boy to Whiskers N Paws, so I was hoping we could find a sponsor to cover the cost.

Hercules is four years old and Popcorn is three, and both have heartworm as expected but are otherwise in good health and are very friendly.  If anyone is interested in adopting please complete the adoption questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt).  I do need to mention that because of their history neither dog is toilet trained, so that may take some time.  As always, all adopters have the free training support of our very experienced HKDR trainer, Cactus, and this applies to all HKDR dogs and puppies.

Agatha is a very sweet girl
I also took the surrendered blind schnauzer, now Agatha, to Acorn for her check-up and Dr Tony confirmed her blindness as well as the heart murmur, but at least there's no heartworm so that's something.

Just as an extra, one of my Lamma dogs had to have a lump removed from her leg and my two baby foster turtles needed to be given antibiotic and vitamin injections for their respiratory tract infections.  Life is never dull.

The photos from Sunday's Whiskers N Paws puppy afternoon were edited and posted too late for inclusion in yesterday's blog, so you can see all of the puppies here (by Elena Mathew):
Monty and Teddy have already been returned to Lamma
We're now very urgently in need of puppy foster homes as two have already been returned after the Chinese New Year break and others are going to be coming back this week.  The pups are used to being in loving family homes with soft beds and all of that, and it upsets me very much to have to put them back into the outdoor area, which is all I have to offer on Lamma.  Please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com if you are able to foster one or two puppies, and we will provide everything needed in terms of food, bed etc, and vet bills.
Willy's sister Celia urgently needs a new home too
Willy will come back this week
