The new puppy area at Whiskers N Paws will be ready for Sunday |
I have been caught out too many times to want to advertise any dogs in advance of their arrival, as more times than not they never turn up, but in this case it's a golden retriever puppy that needs exceptional help. I'm told the pup is six weeks old, but again I can't say for sure that's correct, but let's say it's very young. The reason this puppy is coming to us from the breeder is because it has lost a foot, and while the reason we were given is that the mother bit it, I find that hard to believe. I think it would be most unusual for a mother dog to badly injure her pup unless the conditions of their pen, enclosure or cage were such that the dog acted out of character. In any case the reason for the injury is irrelevant now as the damage has been done, but we will need to assess the situation and decide if a full leg amputation will be necessary. Having just a foot missing is very difficult for a dog as they will be tempted to use the leg, and that will cause all sorts of problems.
There are also two adult golden retrievers coming at the same time as the puppy, and one of them might be the mother, I don't know. Based on the past breeder dogs we've taken in, these adults won't be in good condition physically, but they should have good temperaments. If you are interested in adopting or fostering either the puppy or either of the two adults (I was told five to six years old, but who knows), please complete the Adoption Questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt), or for foster enquiries email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.
