Weds 4th Aug: One big happy family

One big happy family for Percy on the right

I was at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre today when a couple with their three adopted dogs came in and said they wanted to adopt Percy.  Since two of the dogs were from HKDR, namely Farley and Zara (since re-named) I didn't hesitate to say yes, so having completed the paperwork they went back to Whiskers N Paws to collect Percy and take him home.   We're all so happy for Percy, and the wait for his adoption was well worth it.
Lucy loves to play all day

Now we have to find left-behind-Lucy a new friend, since non-stop playing is apparently what she does best.

There are two things I want to share today, not directly HKDR-related but important nonetheless.  I often write about the lack of legislation in Hong Kong to protect animals, and I know I'm not alone in believing that more has to be done to update and improve the outdated laws.  I was very interested to see this article about HKALPO today (copy and paste the link to read) https://www.hkalpo.com/news/tell-me-more-founding-hkalpo?fbclid=IwAR0Tpo1nbrWNVQpr9a9hNK6Jc1OQW8ZtyflDmCC7DIfhJsKvonBrB5t-zjg

The second issue that needs public support relates to the carving up of the very popular waterfront park at Cyberport, and objections to this must be submitted as a matter of urgency.

The master layout plans for Cyberport 5  (A/H10/95) have been submitted to the Town Planning Board for approval. The Board will meet late August to discuss them.

Click here for the gist of the submission and here for the full documents.

Cyberport will be permanently granted the entire popular 6.5ha waterfront park in Pokfulam, of which more than 20% will be lost with the construction of an access road and a new 66,000 sq.m. building. We have yet to learn what will happen with the rest of the park. Cyberport has meticulously avoided public consultation. It's expected to be completed in 2025.

Despite the claim that the overall building height is lowered by 3 metres, the building bulk is substantially bigger than the 2019 proposal. See the comparison here

Southern District Councillor Paul Zimmerman has prepared an
online objection letter with 36 points covering:
  • Cyberport refuses to communicate directly with residents and the district council
  • Cyberport refuses to provide a soft copy of the submission
  • The claim that the visual impact has been eased is misleading
  • The bulk of the building has been increased dramatically
  • The proposed building at the waterfront is taller than nearby Cyberport buildings
  • Extensive loss of public amenity
  • The need for this building has not been justified with latest figures
  • Data centres at the waterfront is a waste of precious land
  • Traffic and transport concerns
Deadline for comments to the Town Planning Board is 6 August 2021. Please click the link to sign the online petition.
