Domino became our first August adoption |
Domino turned out to be one of our lucky in-and-out dogs, something that normally happens to the poodle and labrador puppies but in this case she's a little black mongrel. Picked up from AFCD Sheung Shui on Friday and sent to our Tai Po Homing Centre, I suggested she was transferred to Ap Lei Chau because of her petite size. She arrived in the morning with our driver Ming, and it didn't take long for her to be leaving again, this time with her new family.
Echo at last Sunday's WNP event |
Echo was due to go to Whiskers N Paws for the regular Sunday afternoon puppy event, but in the morning her family applied to join the Failed Fosters Club and were duly admitted to that happy group of adopters. As a result of course, Echo missed having her photo taken by this week's volunteer photographer at Whiskers N Paws, but here are all of the other hopefuls, with many thanks to Jimmy Tsang Puppy Adoption Day 1st August 2021.
Percy-in-the-Middle is a dream puppy |
I wrote yesterday that I would share the names of the dogs and puppies adopted during July and the list is below, with many thanks to all the new families. I also mentioned that I wanted to list the dogs and puppies that had arrived throughout the month, because it might seem that with such a successful adoption rate we must be emptying the Homing Centres. That's not the case at all unfortunately, and particularly at Tai Po where the larger adults stay.
3 year-old Goji |
Even today we accepted a surrendered dog at Ap Lei Chau, another shiba inu, a breed you might get tired of reading about as I always have so much to say about them. It might seem to be a form a madness to take in a dog that has known behaviour problems, but in every shiba case this is because of the way they are kept and treated. I'm not talking about physical cruelty, although sending a dog away to a training kennel is cruel and stupid in my opinion, rather buying a puppy that is completely incompatible with your home and lifestyle. This new shiba, whose name has been changed to Goji, lived in a very small home where he was left alone all day and given very little exercise. No wonder these dogs go somewhat crazy.
Donny is still a puppy |
We now have shiba puppy Donny (whose previous situation was the same as Goji's), and three year-old Damson who is staying on Lamma.
Damson loves to swim |
She also came to us as an puppy who had been in a bad home so she had the typical guarding behaviour.
Gumbo |
In all cases these shibas are not "bad" dogs, they just need a certain type of home and owner. They cannot be confined in small apartments with nothing to do, they have to be mentally stimulated and well socialised. The homes we're looking for need to be large enough to allow the dogs to have some personal space, and with an outdoor area, preferably a garden. As long as you respect these dogs' intelligence and don't try to treat them like dolls, they are actually great companions. If you can offer any of our shiba inus a home (without children please) complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
