Sun 8th Aug: Failed Fosters and new beginnings

In-and-out dachshund on the right

Yes it does happen, we do get the smaller-breed puppies in but they go straight out again as we have a waiting list.  I didn't know about this surrender until Saturday night, and by Sunday morning the dachshund puppy arrived, leaving again with his new family just a few minutes later.  It worked out perfectly as the adoptive family already has a sausage dog, and although they hadn't specified a breed preference this dachshund just happened to come along.

Also arriving at Ap Lei Chau first thing were the five puppies we were expecting, and luckily we had foster homes for them to go to.

Rex adopted

Maybe the new five will be as lucky as three previous puppies that came and went straight out to foster homes, because today all of them were confirmed as staying, two as a pair and one singleton.  We hadn't even set eyes on them since the day they first came to the Homing Centre, so I hope we'll at least see some photos of them as they are now.

Toby adopted

Puppy Sylvie was a popular girl too, and she went home just before the rest of the hopefuls were driven over to Whiskers N Paws for the two-hour play session.

Sylvie was also adopted before the WNP event

Eric Tang was our photographer for the day, and he's been doing this on a volunteer basis for so many years I can't remember exactly how long it's been. Eric's photos are always wonderful, and you can take a look at them all here  Puppy Adoption Day 8th August 2021.  By the way, if you would like to help out on Sunday afternoons as a photographer, please let us know.  We do need people with experience because taking good photos of puppies is much harder than it might seem, and it takes some skill to be able to get to Eric's level of expertise.

Suzy was chosen after the WNP event

Although there were no adoptions to record during the two-hour event, current Whiskers N Paws guest Suzy was adopted later in the afternoon.  Now we have to find another suitable playmate for the other puppy girl staying there, Lucy.  Even better, if Lucy is adopted too we can send a completely new pair to be the HKDR Ambassadors.
Beautiful Lucy

We also held another small adoption event during the afternoon, and here are the photos showing the lovely participating dogs from our Tai Po Homing Centre Mongrel Adoption Day @ PRIVATE i PETS.

Rodger So was the volunteer photographer at this event, and again his photos are beautiful.  I'm determined to find a home for sweet Ziti, the last of  "The Edibles" litter and for no reason at all other than bad luck so far.  I hope this means that in the end he will have the best home of all.   Ziti is so soft and gentle, he'd make the perfect family companion.

Although already shared on our HKDR Facebook page I wanted to add this lovely video to show that all things are possible.  It shows ex-HKDR poodle Taffy, now Eleven (name not age) moving with his family to a new home and life in Portugal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XtdD5Bh8r0

I know flying dogs to other countries is currently a nightmare, and it's true that Eleven is a small dog so was able to be in the cabin along with the humans.  However some airlines are easier than others for European destinations, and I believe Lufthansa and KLM are two of them (but please do your own research as this might have changed).  It does mean having to fly via Germany or Holland, but that's acceptable if it gets you there in the end.

Finally, RTHK (English) are making a programme about dog adoption and are looking for potential adopters willing to participate in the programme.  If this is you, please email me at sallyandersen@hongkongdogrescue.com so I can pass your name on.
