Thurs 19th Aug: The worst kind of abandonment

Who can do this to their dog???

It's a never-ending situation as we get daily reports of dogs being found or losing their homes, and today it was a poodle that is now at AFCD awaiting release, and a (rare these days) cocker spaniel that was taken to a remote part of Sai Kung and tied to a fence while the owners (apparently driving a white car) drove off.  I don't care what problems there are with the family, the home or the dog in question, this is appalling cruelty and there is never an excuse for such behaviour.   Even surrendering to AFCD is better than this, and it was pure luck that someone spotted the dog in the dark and was able to save it.  The cocker will come to our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre on Friday and we can see if it's microchipped and what age and condition it's in. Please don't expect that anyone will be prosecuted even if there is a registered owner, because that has never happened yet.
The poodle was also found stray

I say cocker spaniels are rare these days and it's true that they used to be a popular breed at one time but we haven't seen any for some years.  Unfortunately cockers often had behaviour issues and I suspect it's why they lost favour, but other breeds like the pekingese, who also used to be extremely popular, have all but disappeared.  Nowadays it's corgis and shiba inus that top the popularity list, but I wonder how long it will be before that too changes.

One thing that never changes is the number of mixed breeds, mongrels or whatever you want to call them, who are abandoned and today we took yet another one in from AFCD, with photos and details coming later. Not surprisingly, in fact almost inevitably, this dog has recently had puppies, and as I wrote in yesterday's post this can happen at a very young age and it's why we spay (desex) females at six months.

Usually the mongrels that end up as homeless have no behaviour  issues, while the purebreeds like poodles, shiba inu and the cocker spaniel are often abandoned because of such problems.   Our "Red Dogs" are a good example of that, all small and emotionally damaged to varying extent, so we have to assess all such dogs before putting them up for adoption.

As a reminder for the very popular Cube Calendar inclusion, you will need to submit your adopted dog's photo by 2nd September, so you don't have too long to find that special snap and get it sent in.

  1. It's beyond comprehension to me that some heartless person could take their family member to a remote place, tie a dog up and leave them there while they drive off!!!! Thank God that somebody found the dog and it wasn't left there to starve to death! My Cocker, Candy [formerly Shanti from HKDR], is now 16 and a half, and still in pretty good health. XXX
