Thurs 4th June: The beauty of black dogs

When it comes to writing my blog there are days like today when actually a lot of stuff is happening but not anything that is shareworthy, or at least not just yet.  In fact it feels as though HKDR is taking a huge step to the next level, which happens to coincide with the switch in structure which has been years in the planning and which formally comes into being on the first of July.  On that day we will also have a new bank account, so obviously I'll be sharing details of that very soon.

In terms of our work nothing will change and we'll continue to do what we can to help as many dogs and puppies as possible, taking them in and looking after them until they can find new forever homes or interim foster families, and of course raising the necessary funding to be able to do so.

Wizard went home today
Puppy Wizard was adopted today from Ap Lei Chau, while another Homing Centre resident had to make an emergency visit to Concordia Pet Care in Happy Valley for what turned out to be pyometra (infected uterus).  This is a life-threatening condition which only happens to female dogs that haven't been desexed, and it's not that uncommon.
Adorable brother/sister Ticket and Fidget

We didn't know if Fidget had already been spayed (the term for female desexing) as she had a scar on her stomach and her brother Ticket had been neutered. In these cases, and especially in smaller dogs who are already a little bit older, we will often wait to see if they come into season before putting them through surgery which could end up being unnecessary.  Of course now we know that Fidget's scar wasn't due to desexing and luckily the pyometra could be removed before causing real problems.

With support from illustrator The Art of Bonnie Pang, HKDR is running this social media campaign to promote the beauty of 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬 (𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐬/ 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐮). Many of our rescue dogs are mongrels that aren't getting as much attention as they deserve.

There are people who still favour purebreds over mongrels, but most dog lovers in Hong Kong have started to see the unique beauty of our own local Hong Kong Dogs.

In this "𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬" album, we will introduce the most common “𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬” one by one with the lovely illustrations by Bonnie. If you have one of these special Hong Kong Dogs at home, let’s share their photos and show the world how beautiful they are!
