Thurs 11th June: Checking in new guests

Female Coffee
It was a day of new dogs coming in rather than adoptions, and having successfully passed our interview yesterday the puppy was brought to Ap Lei Chau and handed over, as were the two beagles.

While the puppy, now called Amanda, was eager to join the other pups and be able to play, the beagles were understandably distraught, howling and desperately trying to get out.  In fact I dread to think what the condition of the Homing Centre will be like on Friday morning after a night of the dogs hammering and scratching at the door, and it's really heartbreaking to imagine their confusion.  I really hope they can find new homes soon, but even then having been living with a family with children for the past six years, as well as other dogs, it will take time for them to settle.

It's bad enough when dogs are surrendered, even though there are admittedly occasions when it's unavoidable, but to hand over dogs with expired licenses, and a license that's still in the name of the previous owner, is inexcusable.  It's not even the fact that by law you have to renew your dog's license every three years, it's the fact that we are unable to change ownership on an expired license.  It costs only $80 to get an updated rabies vaccination and license if you go to any of the four AFCD Animal Management Centres, and it takes a very short time to be issued with the updated paperwork, a matter of a few minutes.  As it was the beagles had to be taken to AFCD Pokfulam to have their rabies vaccinations and for us to be issued with Temporary Keeper status while the slow process of tracing the registered owner begins.

While the three new arrivals were being checked in at Ap Lei Chau, the four senior labradors turned up at Tai Po, seriously overweight and very unfit.  In many ways I feel that being surrendered to HKDR is the best thing that can happen to dogs like these, because at least they will go to homes where they can and will be treated properly.  We've seen previous similar labradors have their lives transformed after being adopted, so we know it's perfectly possible, even with oldies like these four.

Checking the weather forecast for Sunday, it looks as though it might be a rainy day for the Murray Hotel event but we'll be under cover so it doesn't matter too much.   The list of dogs that will be going is being finalised, and one of them will be beagle cross Macy, who is currently doing really well in her foster home and has proved to be a lovely girl.  We'd love to see her adopted before she becomes too used to her current foster home so hope Sunday will be her lucky day.
