Macy is a lovely beagle cross, currently in foster care |
With the first typhoon, or at least tropical storm, headed towards Hong Kong this weekend we're watching very carefully to see what's going to be happening on Sunday and whether the planned Murray Hotel event will be able to go ahead. Rain doesn't matter because the area is under cover, but of course if the T8 signal is up that changes things completely. If we do end up having to cancel, please remember that both Homing Centres will still be open and the foster dogs like Inky and Macy that were due to be there can still be met by arrangement through Cindy, our Foster Coordinator.

We had a surprise addition at Tai Po today when I received an email from someone who had asked about surrendering his husky a while ago but then changed his mind. Suddenly he said that despite being very sad about it he would be bringing the dog to the Homing Centre today, and not wanting to have a husky sitting out in the blazing sun I posted his photo on our HKDR Facebook page immediately. This is a two year-old husky boy, who like all of his breed will need full-time air conditioning as well as company and attention. Huskies that are left on their own tend to be quite destructive as well as noisy, the very reason why this boy is being given up. We have a potential adopter coming to meet him on Saturday but in case that doesn't work out please complete the adoption questionnaire anyway.
Also due to arrive at Tai Po on Saturday and from the same home as the two beagles who are now at Ap Lei Chau, we're taking back Evie, adopted in 2014, and a husky cross who wasn't from us. These dogs have lived in a family home with children for as long as they can remember, so it will be devastating for them to be at the Homing Centre. If you can foster either of them please let Cindy know by emailing foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, thank you.

One of the 4 pups, already completely transforned with food and shelter |
Also coming on Saturday we have four new puppies who were found huddled together in the recent rain, starving and in dire need of help. Once again I want to thank those volunteers who go out in all weathers to help the homeless animals, rescuing any that are suitable for adoption and at the very least desexing those that are already too wild to be able to home. These particular puppies are remarkably friendly and already look completely different after being fed and cared for in a foster home for a short period. This is what rescue work is really about, and I hope all four of these puppies find amazing homes before too long.
As I was walking through the park from the Ap Lei Chau waterfront today, I saw a dog who appeared to be lost and scared, and was dancing trying to avoid getting her paws burned by the hot ground. I looked around for any possible owner, and called to the dog to get her into the shade where at least the gound was cooler. She came towards me but stayed far enough away that I couldn't get hold of her collar, so I went into the Homing Centre to get water and to ask for help from Andrea and others.
I had to leave to go to AFCD but Eagle, one of our dedicated volunteers, managed to loop a leash round the dog's neck and get her inside. Her microchip showed a registered owner in Tseung Kwan O, and that the license had expired two years previously. Thanks to an Ap Lei Chau community WhatsApp group, which I had no idea existed, someone claiming to be the owner turned up, but I have to admit that I wasn't convinced that Lily, as the dog is called, was happy to be reunited. I can't help wondering why she didn't just go home by herself and why she was out wandering in the first place. Once again I can't stress the importance of keeping licenses up to date and changing ownership if necessary. It was pure luck that Lily was spotted by me and that we were able to get her safely inside and out of the heat.
