Sat 6th April: An action-packed day

Sage had a very full day today
It was full-on action today with the Flag Day starting at seven in the morning, and once again my thanks to all of the volunteers who were up so early to pick up the collection bags and head off to their designated areas around Hong Kong Island.  Many took their dogs and several Ap Lei Chau residents also joined the fundraising efforts, with Sage the small-sized mixed breed getting back just in time to be adopted.  There are lots of photos on Facebook but here are a few
Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) added 22 new photos to the album Flag Day 6 April 2019.

Other than Sage it was unfortunately more in than out as far as the dogs were concerned, and the first to arrive was the sharpei doglet.  Luckily he's a very friendly boy so we hope he won't have to stay long with us before moving on to his new family.
This sharpei boy is only 8 months old

I was also coordinating with Catherine (of Catherine's Puppies) and Kaz O'Carroll (Animals Asia) to take in some puppies, not from the breeder this time but still very much in need of somewhere to go.  As all rescue groups seem to be full of puppies, Catherine and I agreed to split these two litters.  We took the fluffies plus one, while Catherine held on to the other white babies with the agreement that we'd see how it goes with adoption and perhaps take more.  The puppies from both litters are gorgeous but were covered in fleas and tick and I think we can assume that at least some of them will come down with tick fever, or worse.  So for now we're looking for foster homes if anyone is able and willing, and you can email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com if you can help.
Gorgeous babies

Cello last year before her move to Tai Po
At Tai Po it was celebration time for Cello, a young adult who has been with us since she was a very young puppy.  She was part of a litter who were all adopted except Cello, and she stayed as an Ap Lei Chau office dog for some time before moving to Tai Po.  Finally it's her turn and we are all thrilled.
This gorgeous shaggy boy is sweet and playful

Taking her place was a dog with a very sad story.  I'd noticed the photos and background on Facebook and offered to help, as the poor boy had not only been kept in a cage for two years, but the cage was hidden away out of sight and behind a load of junk so there wasn't even anything for the dog to see. A rescue operation was mounted by some volunteers as the location of the place was quite difficult to get to, and the dog arrived at Tai Po in the early evening and just in time for his first ever walk out of the cage.  He looks a bit like a Giant Schnauzer or perhaps a very dirty Old English Sheepdog, and maybe he's a mix of both in which case he's an Old English Schnauzer.  I'm grateful to everyone involved in this case for saving this lovely dog from further misery, and remarkably - just like the ex-breeder pooldes - he seems to be a happy and playful boy, and very friendly.

Last but not least, senior beagle Stinker was well enough to leave hospital and he's now back at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre.   As heartwarming as it has been to receive so much love as well as donations towards his considerable vet costs, I hope we don't experience another story like this one.
Welcome back Stinker
