Weds 20th March: What breed are you?

If it seems to some people that we're too strict in our adoption criteria, that's because we see the results of dogs and puppies going to homes that aren't suitable, or don't understand the basic needs of dogs.  Every day there's at least one request to surrender, usually more, and for various reasons. It's always upsetting at the best of times, but especially when the dog in question had been adopted from HKDR as a puppy.  One particular adopter last week thought that we wouldn't find out they had abandoned their year-old dog at AFCD, but a microchip remains in place for life and will always give the game away.  So however many dogs we have waiting for homes, we will always do our best to ensure that they will not only be well cared for in terms of food and shelter, but also all of the other things that make dogs happy.

As I'm sure you know, we have so many dogs that are lovely in every way, and it's impossible to show them all off here on my blog.  If you would like to browse through our website, you can see all of the older puppies and adults we have available (www.hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/), bearing in mind that this is just a glimpse into what they look like and their personalities.  It's really just the start in terms of choosing the right dog for you, your home and lifestyle, and sometimes the one you first think that you want turns out not to be the best match.

I wrote recently about my suspicions regarding DNA testing to find out which breeds were in a dog's make-up.  Today a friend sent me a link to an article about someone who sent their own saliva swab to a dog DNA testing company, with the result coming back as a malamute, sharpei and labrador mix.  (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/13/dog-human-dna-test/).  I don't know what the person looked like (lots of hair and a wrinkled face maybe?), but it did rather support my belief that these tests aren't exactly reliable.
