I was completely fooled by the wonderful cool breeze blowing through my house from the sea, and set off for Ap Lei Chau with King, the shiba inu, dressed for October weather only to find the sun shining brightly when I stepped off the sampan.
Leaving to start his new life was Derek the sharpei-cross puppy, and the last of his litter to be adopted.
Another last of the litter, River the "Water Baby" was picked up by her new family who were in the middle of moving to a new home when they completed the adoption paperwork so there were a few days of waiting.
As these puppies left the latest litter of babies arrived and went off to their foster homes, three to one and two to another. The fifth puppy, and last to be found, was in a bad way with maggots already infecting his tail and seemingly having swallowed sand along with rainwater, hence his name Sandboy. He's the smallest of the litter too, but thankfully drank the milk offered so we hope he'll gain some strength very quickly.
Having just waved goodbye to River and her litter, all of whom were found as tiny and helpless babies during heavy rain and thunderstorms, it's quite amazing to see the changes that occur so quickly once the puppies are safe and dry indoors, and with plenty of milk to drink. Thanks once again to those foster homes who perform such miracles with these vulnerable little lives.
Thanks to the holiday and the great weather we had a lot of visitors to Tai Po, and although there were no confirmed adoptions I hope I'll be able to share good news over the coming weekend.
