Mon 16th Sept: Still they come in

Gus was in and out
We had yet another intake of dogs of various sizes today, this time from AFCD Sheung Shui, so I was very relieved that there were no new ones at Pokfulam AFCD when I went there to meet up with the now-adopter of new boy Gus.  He'd been taken home on Saturday for a trial with the resident dog, and had settled in so well and so quickly that when the arrangement was made to have Gus microchipped and rabies-vaccinated, the license was issued in the adopter's name.
1 year-old (or younger) Bumble came on Saturday

The other dogs that came with Gus on Saturday, minus puppy Sparky who was also immediately adopted, went to Acorn in the morning along with the new AFCD dogs, so when I was there later with Otis and poodle Kobe the clinic was filled with HKDR newcomers.  Two of the ex-AFCD group are small dogs, Westie cross Wesley and pom Nugget, while the other three were sent to Tai Po later in the afternoon.  We always have new dogs coming in so there's a constant re-shuffling of spaces as pens are needed or puppies grow big enough to join the main group.
Okra is a small young adult
Little puppy Noggin was a Saturday boy

One of Saturday's intake had looked like a larger-sized puppy, but after Acorn had estimated her age to be a year judging from her teeth, rather than go to Tai Po Okra is staying at Ap Lei Chau.  The problem is that she's just big and agile enough to be able to jump all of the gates and partitions, so we don't know what she'll get up to during the night.  She needs a home please, or at least a foster.

Wesley the Westie (?) cross boy

As new dogs come in those already with us tend to get pushed down the line in terms of attention, but we still have many recently arrived small-sized dogs at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre or in foster homes.  Bulldog cross Box is one of them, and Poppy who made her debut at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday.  Dini is another young dog who desperately needs a suitable home, and perferably with another dog that he can befriend.
Dini is gorgeous but withdrawn at the moment

Razzle and Dilly came with poodle Miffy
Chihuahua-cross Lolita and terrier-crosses Dilly and Razzle have also been in foster care for different reasons, Lolita because she was so timid and the latter pair because they were unlucky enough to arrive during the distemper outbreak crisis.   They were infected with the virus but being adults came through it, much to our relief.  There was an enormous feeling of guilt and sadness during this terrible period, and I hope we don't ever have to go through it again.

Of course there are hundreds of beautiful sweet and easy dogs at our Tai Po Homing Centre, but trying to show and name them all would take forever but they're all on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Dogs).  Off the top of my head I can think of Stan, Ivory and Tusk from Stanley Barracks, and ultra-friendly Prudence who I remember so well from her days at Pokfulam AFCD when she was held for longer than usual. These are just four out of too many.

We accept new dogs from AFCD because they have nowhere else to go and face death if not taken, but that doesn't mean we really have space for more.  With so many already waiting it's difficult to accommodate everyone, so we need to find loving and suitable homes for as many as we can.  It just seems wrong and so unfair that not having a breed name means these amazing dogs are passed by in favour of the pet shop purchases, many of which are difficult in terms of behaviour and nowhere near as lovely or loving as our mixed breeds.  You're welcome at our Tai Po Homing Centre any time to come and meet them to to see what I'm talking about, just be prepared for lots of licks and pleas for attention and tummy rubs.

Last call for tickets for Saturday's big party
We're counting down the last few days until this Saturday's big fundraiser "Bohemian Pupsody", and I'll be there along with the rest of the team and our guest hosts Vita Starkin and Barry Gold.  Last-minute tickets can still be bought as tables can be added if needed, but please don't leave it until the last minute.  If you want to have a great evening with lots of fun and the opportunity to support HKDR, especially during these difficult times in Hong Kong when we really need help, please email nicole@hongkongdogescue.com for information and reservations.  I'm looking forward to seeing friends and supporters, and I hope that includes all of you.
