Fri 6th Sept: Two poodles and Mona

Kobe having a haircut
I sent Lamma-based poodle Kobe over to Acorn to have his leg X-rayed as he'd been holding it up off-and-on for some time, but I wasn't expecting to hear that both his knee (patella) and cruciate ligament needed surgery, and since he was there seeing Dr Tony anyway it was done immediately.  The poor little guy is now heavily bandaged but Dr Tony says he should make a full recovery.

I took another Lamma poodle across with me in the afternoon, a very sweet (and typically needy) girl called Penny.  She'd been surrendered to AFCD by her owner, who told the staff there that the dog had an incurable health problem even though she seemed to be very bright, bouncing around and desperate for cuddles.  Acorn were sent the previous vet's notes and found that Penny was being treated for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) but the medication had resulted in fluid accumulating in the abdomen.   For the past few weeks we've been weaning Penny off the medication while having regular tests to monitor the response, and so far everything has been fine.  She's on a special low fat diet, but other than that she's leading a perfectly normal life and is really ready for a new home.  As said, Penny is a very sweet (if needy) poodle who just wants love so if you're interested please complete the adoption questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt).

Mona is a good match for this family
We've been getting so many enquiries for the young husky Pilot, but none so far that are really suitable for this breed.  That doesn't mean that the potential adopters aren't good enough to adopt, it's just that huskies need a lot of attention and exercise, and may not be the best dogs to live with cats or other small dogs.  One of those families who had initially asked about Pilot was introduced to another dog that was a much better match, and so Mona now has a lovely home.  Thank you to her adopters for understanding that one of the things we do is to find a dog or puppy that will be most suitable for that particular home, and for listening to our advice.
Box needs desexing and his cherry eye fixed

We took in another husky from AFCD Shatin on Thursday, a three year-old boy who was surrendered in pretty bad condition and with terrible skin. I'm not sure what name he's been given at Tai Po but there was another dog that came from a same home, a bulldog cross that I've called Box (short for bulldog X) and he's also not in the best shape but he's fixable and a very sweet dog.  Box is also three years old and now staying at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre.

You can see why our vet bills are always enormous, because even if a dog is otherwise healthy there's still the health check, blood test and vaccinations that need to be done, as well as desexing for adults.  If you would like to contribute specifically towards the vet costs please visit this link https://hongkongdogrescue.com/vet-fund-donation-form/

Our long-term volunteer Becky will be at Concordia Pet Care on Saturday with a selection of lovely puppies, and we'll be back at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday with even more.  If you can't commit to actual adoption please consider fostering instead, and you can get details about this option from Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com
