Tues 9th May: New Animal Trader Licensing laws starting to bite

From what I'm hearing on the dog rescue grapevine, breeders are throwing out dogs like never before as a result of the new Cap139B Animal Trader Licensing restrictions,  and that can only be a good thing even if it does mean that at the moment all rescue groups are overloaded with dogs needing homes. Hopefully once the initial panic has subsided we'll see things return to normal, from our side at least, and hopefully the breeders will stop trying to cram as many dogs into a small space as they possible can.  With a bit of luck a few prosecutions will make them realise that times have changed, and I look forward to that.

In the meantime we have so many small dogs at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, and with more standing by to come in very soon. They aren't all ex-breeder dogs of course, but many are and every day I'm being asked if we can accept another few.  Today's request was for a four year-old golden retriever girl, so if you're looking for this breed please let me know.

This 8-month girl is very sweet and quiet
The pretty little long-haired dachshund puppy is also looking for a home, the potential adopters having decided that one dachshund in the family was enough and that they would prefer to just foster. The puppy is extremely sweet but she has weak leg joints, hopefully due to her having been caged all her life but possibly because of a genetic problem.  We are waiting to see how and if she improves with gentle exercise.
Ginger and Sandy back on track

I was back at AFCD today with more of the new arrivals having them rabies vaccinated and licensed,  as well as making my usual trip to Acorn.  There was good news today about several puppies who have had treatment for tick fever and who are finally out of the woods and were able to be vaccinated.  These pups have to have their blood tested regularly to monitor red cell and platelet counts, and to make sure that both are improving and finally stable.  It's time consuming and frustrating that so many litters were infected at the same time, and I'm thankful we seem to be over it now and all pups can go to Whiskers N Paws with a clean bill of health.
