Mon 15th May: Preparing for renovations

We need some gazebos if anyone can sponsor
After all the excitement of Sunday the rain came down today and put an end to the fun,  and I was reminded that we need some new gazebos for both Lamma and Tai Po, at least to last us until the Homing Centre renovations have been completed.   If anyone can sponsor, or even better buy, some gazebos it would be greatly appreciated, and while I remember we are also in urgent need of a large dryer.  We were lucky enough to have a new washing machine sponsored very recently, but of course with the rain we have to be able to dry the dogs' bedding too.

The renovations that I mentioned will be taking place at Tai Po and it's a huge undertaking, but we've got to the stage of having ordered the first batch of materials and the actual work will be able to start fairly soon.  We were also planning a complete renovation of the small Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, but since we extended our lease there for only a year we felt it would be too wasteful to rip everything out to re-build.  However there is a real need for a coat of paint and a new front door, so we'll go ahead with that at least, and it will happen at the end of May/early June.  Obviously we can't paint while the dogs are running around so we will need short-term "renovation fosters" for a few days.  If you can help by taking in a little dog (or two) please let Cindy know at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.

Enzo as a baby in his foster home
I also need a foster for a three month-old puppy who was returned on Sunday, and who I can hear crying as I sit here at my work desk.  Enzo came to us as a two week-old along with his three siblings, and they were lucky enough to find foster homes in pairs where they were first bottle fed, then weaned and finally were old enough to be adopted.  Enzo was the first to go but he wasn't a good match for the adopters and was brought back to Whiskers N Paws at the weekend.  I wasn't sad because I had actually recommended that he be returned, knowing that coming back sooner than later was the better option, but having nowhere for Enzo to go but outside with the other pups his age.  He has never known anything but being in a home environment so it's a shock for him, and he's not at all happy (and nor am I).  He needs a place to stay until he finds a new home, and preferable with an adult dog and space to run around as he's a large-sized puppy who loves to play.  Please let me or Cindy know if you can take Enzo in as a guest for a while.
Buggy is old and blind
Eddie is 14 years old

I have just received some very happy news of the confirmed adoption of senior little dogs Eddie and Buggy.  Eddie was one of three old pekes surrendered to AFCD together, while blind Buggy came from another home.  It's wonderful to know that dogs like these still have a chance to start again and live out their days in comfort and with love, and we are so immensely grateful to their now-adopter and all adopters of oldies.
