Fri 15th Jan: A home guaranteed until the end

Lola at Ap Lei Chau

We're expecting a few dogs to be leaving for new homes over the weekend although there wasn't much movement today, other than the dogs and puppies enjoying their playtime.

There was also great excitement on Lamma when I received a box of dog treats sent over with the regular delivery of food and newspapers (always needed please). Although the dogs obviously have plenty of food and enjoy a good life in general, they always go crazy for treats and seem to know exactly what the crackling of the bags means.  I suspect all dog owners have experienced that stone-deaf dogs suddenly hear very well and blind dogs see clearly when there are treats around!   I need to mention that we order healthy dried meat treats from Australia, so although the dogs aren't really picky and will happily devour anything, it's important that as much as possible any treats and snacks aren't the processed and chemical-laden supermarket types.  When asked the other day by someone who wanted to contribute towards something specific I suggested sponsoring an order of the Australian treats, so we're looking forward to that delivery arriving.  If you would also like to sponsor these healthy treats please email May at may@hongkongdogrescue.com for information.

You probably know that many of our dogs, the Tai Po and Lamma residents especially, have been with us for a very long time, their entire lives in fact.  It's inevitable having so many reaching double digits in terms of years that losing them has become a regular event, and today it was shy Rosette who joined the many others in the Great Kennel in the Sky.  Rosette started off as a Lamma puppy, as they all did back then, and moved to Tai Po several years ago.  Although we are a committed No Kill Organisation, at HKDR we all believe that extending the life of a dog that's suffering and has no hope of recovery is unfair, and that euthanasia is the kindest and most humane option.  Our promise of a home for life until death applies to all of our dogs, as well as a promise to end any suffering when the time comes.
