Tues 1st Aug: A new beginning

Troy
A new month begins, and the countdown to the end of the summer holidays and the start of what I hope will be a new season of adoptions.  It's been a slow time for the current group of puppies, even though they are really lovely, just because of the timing.  I always feel it's unfair that any puppy should fail to find a home simply because of the time it was born but that's the way it works unfortunately, and siblings Tanner, Cameron, Troy and Paris are just four that I hope will be chosen before too long.

At least the small dogs are less affected by the seasonal ups and downs, and there has been quite a bit of interest in the new arrivals although of course they still have to pass adoption interviews.

Many dogs wait a long time before they are finally noticed and one of those was Coco, a golden retriever girl who left Tai Po today.  While that was happy news for her, there are still hundreds of dogs, older puppies and doglets eagerly hoping to be the lucky ones, many of whom came to us as baby puppies.

Doglet Jimmy was sent to the big Homing Centre from Lamma today to join his "J Litter" siblings there, and I don't know if he or the others will end up being one of those who live their whole lives on the waiting list.  If I think about all of those who missed out on adoption as babies the list is too long, and honestly too upsetting.  There is a small window of opportunity for most puppies, around eight weeks of age, and if they don't find homes at that point then their chances diminish with every passing week.

Flop was one Tai Po dog who was with us until the end, although she wasn't an old dog when she passed away today.  She had been sent to Acorn after seeming to be tired after the weekend, and blood tests showed that she was really very ill with a below normal red cell count and no white cell production at all.  She died naturally and very quickly, before whatever was wrong with her could be firmly established, and before I had to make a decision myself.

It's now just over a month until the start of the events season, and for us that means our "Diamond Dogs" Gala Dinner on Saturday 9th September.  Most of the planning and preparation has already been done, but we are still looking for a few more auction and other prizes to complete the line-up.  If you have any high quality products or services that you can donate, either as a business or individual, please let Jamie know by emailing her at jamie@hongkongdogrescue.com, thank you.
