Weds 22nd June: Mid-summer heat

It's officially mid-summer, and it certainly feels like it too.  We warn about the dangers regularly, but there are still dogs who die from heat stroke every year, and with some breeds the temperature doesn't even have to be as high as it is now.  I see dogs being walked on concrete in the middle of the day, and just wonder if their owners have any idea how hot the roads and pavements can get.  As much as regular exercise is necessary for any dog, please be sensible about when and for how long a dog should to taken out in these current conditions.

Weekends are the same as any other day for me personally, but I do look forward to Saturdays and Sundays because this is when we get more visits from potential adopters, especially at our Tai Po Homing Centre.   I really feel for the dogs when it's very hot, or cold, or raining heavily, as all of these extreme weather conditions affect the dogs that are living outside without air-conditioning or warm shelter.  We do have fans and do our best to cool the dogs, but it's not the same as a real home with four walls and a roof.

Richie

Our "top" Tai Po dogs at the moment are Richie, Sarah, Otto, Candy, Gladys, Solo, Roxie, Cassius, Bimble, Lucas, Limo, Timmy, Camille and Dudley.  You can check their individual profiles at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/ as well as the many others who are waiting to be chosen.  Some of those named here came to HKDR as puppies, like Richie, Lucas and Dudley, and these are ones I feel for the most.  They have been in loving foster homes and have their whole lives ahead of them, and I really hope they won't become one of those left behind for ever.
