Tues 7th June: Planning ahead for leaving

With the heavy rain set to be with us for the rest of the week there's always a worry about flooding at Tai Po, and concern that all of the dogs have dry shelter.  We have some renovations going on at the moment, which have included knocking down a termite-infested outdoor house, so the image of very wet dogs always plays in my mind during these rainy periods.

There's also the prospect of more "rain babies", meaning young puppies being washed down hillsides and, if very lucky, being found by rescuers, and that's something that's inevitable over the summer months.  Although I haven't received news of any foundlings yet (and keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be any this time round), if you would be willing to take in any such puppies as the need arises, please let Cindy know by emailing foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.  It's always good to have names on standby.

Baxter was one of the lucky Tai Po dogs that was recently adopted, and now, just a short time after being picked from the crowd of hopefuls, he's on the move again.  This time it's to Canada, so we'll be needing a flight volunteer for him in a couple of months.

At least getting dogs into Europe, the UK, USA and Canada is really very easy as far as the paperwork is concerned, while other countries like Australia and New Zealand are a different matter.  The wait for flights as well as all of the documentation, blood test results and everything else is around six months, and there are a growing number of dogs needing temporary care during these waiting periods.  We're being asked by some adopters if we can look after the dogs at HKDR until they can get on a flight, but unfortunately that's really not possible.  We struggle as it is to accommodate the dogs that are genuinely homeless, and the best we can do is to suggest suitable boarding.   It's expensive I know, but that's a consideration that all dog adopters need to take into account if there's a chance that they may be leaving Hong Kong.
