Sun 5th June: Trying again for the shiba inu collection

Bliss is now confirmed as adopted

Starting with two puppy adoptions, one following a successful meeting at Alice's foster home and the other after a short - and again successful - trial.  Bliss is now confirmed as becoming a forever family member, and of course we're very happy for both puppies.

Jimmy Tsang was back once again as our volunteer photographer at Whiskers N Paws, and although there was only one on-site adoption that took place today, we are expecting follow-up enquiries, as almost always happens. If you see any puppies that you would like to meet Puppy Adoption Day 5th June 2022, either in their foster homes or at our Kennedy Town Homing Centre, please start by completing the adoption questionnaire as a first step.

Toppy went home today

Although HKDR is lucky enough to have two Homing Centres, the large one at Tai Po and a small one in Kennedy Town, as well as an additonal location on Lamma Island, our intention is never to keep dogs long term.  Admittedly there are certain dogs that realistically are hard to find suitable homes for, meaning the very shy ones who really don't show their best side during meetings, or those with certain behaviour issues, and these often end up staying with us for their entire lives.   I'm sure you know that HKDR is a No Kill Organisation, meaning we will never euthanise a dog unless it's the only humane option, almost always terminal illness.

This doesn't mean that all of our long-term dogs have health or behaviour issues, as many who are perfectly lovely simply get overlooked, but I thought it was time to give our shiba inus another try at finding suitable homes.  I have to stress the word suitable, because we know from experience that these dogs will simply be returned after a short time if the home isn't right.  By that I mean both the space and environment, as well as the knowledge and experience of the adopter.   There are three shibas that are currently staying on Lamma (Damson, Donny and Gumbo), and two at Tai Po, Akio and Goji, and without the pressures of having to conform to human expectations, they're all fine and quite happy.  (I can include cocker spaniel Phaedra in the Lamma group too, as she and Damson love to go swimming together).

After posting the shiba's details on Facebook there was a huge response, but sadly not one that offered what we're looking for.  So to make it clear, without a large enough living space, which ideally would include a garden or terrace, the shibas become frustrated and end up being problematic.  They are not cuddly lapdogs, they are bold adventurers, and probably the most independent of all breeds that I can think of.

If you would like to give offer a home to one of our shibas, please complete the adoption questionnaire as a first step https://hongkongdogrescue.com/.../adoption-questionnaire/.

Mandy is staying forever

I don't want to forget another adoption, this time a Tai Po girl who by coincidence went to a home with a resident shiba inu.  At first things were a little bit tense, but after a short time the two dogs became friends, and now Mandy is officially Mollie and will be staying forever. Yay!
