Tues 14th June: The Life Saver Club

The small dog house residents

You may already know about our monthly sponsorship programme, the Life Saver Club, but just in case you're new to HKDR this is where and how you can "adopt" one of our dogs without actually taking him or her home.  For many it's an especially meaningful way to donate as you "have" your own dog, and depending on the level of the monthly subscription there are regular updates, or even visits arranged if requested.  Meeting the sponsored dogs is obviously easier if they're living at our Tai Po Homing Centre, or perhaps the Red Dog Centre in Ap Lei Chau, but today the Life Saver Club sponsors of shiba inu Donny came to Lamma to see him in person.  This was possible because staff member Eagle had come over to collect one of the ex-Ap Lei Chau office dogs to take her to see a vet, due to the fact she was losing weight (it turned out she's fine, she just needs to eat more).

Donny

As it happened I'd decided to move Donny from one section of the Lamma base to the Small Dogs House (previously called the Lamma Home for Small Delinquents).  Donny is fine with other dogs and I thought he would enjoy the more home-like environment of the "SDH",  and so far it's going well.

You may wonder why Donny, a young and petite shiba inu, hasn't yet been adopted, and the fact is that although we've had many enquiries about him he shares the sometimes unpredictable behaviour with so many others of the same breed.  Although calm and easygoing most of the time, if he gets angry then he can bite the nearest legs (being his height), so hopefully living with fewer and smaller dogs will mean he doesn't get annoyed any more.   For now we're grateful to his sponsors for covering his living costs, plus extras like treats and so on.

The attraction of shiba inus has a lot to do with their small size and the fact that they're undeniably cute with their smiling faces, but that smile can be deceiving at times.

Very sweet boy Beemer

We have far fewer small dogs available than larger ones, and those that come to us are usually quickly adopted.  It's only those with health or behaviour problems that tend to get left behind, even if they're very sweet.  Dogs like Beemer with his two-and-a-half legs, and who nonetheless loves to run and play. We also have young French bulldog Francine, now recovering from her initial health scare in a foster home. She's also a very sweet-natured dog, but she may have permanent heart damage (possibly due to heartworm or the actual treatment).
Ilona

We currently have three healthy and small-sized dogs at our Kennedy Town Homing Centre, two new girls Ilona and Inky, and terrier-type Scribble, who's had really bad luck in her life so far.

If interested in adoption, please start by completing the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
