Tues 3rd May: Visiting the Lamma dogs

Suddenly the cold weather disappeared and it turned into the perfect day for Iris and Eagle to visit the Lamma base, and specifically to give cocker spaniel Phaedra a much-needed haircut.  Phaedra wasn't too happy about the clippers, but the following swim made up for the drama.   In fact, like all spaniels Phaedra loves the water, and ideally any potential home would be near to the sea.  In terms of behaviour Phaedra is quite an easy dog, but she still doesn't like strangers and will bark at people she doesn't know.  As a guard dog she's be perfect, although it's all bark and no bite.

The other dogs that Iris and Eagle came to see were the ex-Homing Centre office dogs, including the three shiba inus, Damson, Donny and Gumbo.  Like Phaedra, they are all available for adoption but their needs are also quite specific, meaning adequate indoor and outdoor space and no children in the home.  All three came to us as older puppies, but their early months had been in unsuitable homes which resulted in typical shiba guarding behaviour.   You can see from the photo taken today that all three get along with each other, and with the other dogs they live with, but this is because they have a large outdoor area and the freedom to choose where they want to be.

At the Home for Small (and shy) Dogs, again they're all very happy doing their own thing.  The four "Cricket Family" are very close and spend most of their time together, while River and Rumble play non-stop.  American cocker Leo has been living on Lamma for a long time, and while he came to us as a very angry one year-old, he's now a very sweet older boy (who also loves swimming).

There's really no dog that isn't available for adoption, but the rehabilitation work that we do can easily be undone in the wrong home.  We have seen this with a few of the dogs I've mentioned who have been to new homes and then come back, so we are very careful about ensuring that any potential adopter understands the behaviour and needs of any of these dogs.  If you are interested in adopting any of our HKDR dogs or puppies, please start by completing the adoption questionnaire at   https://hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
