Weds 5th May: Happy Campers

The Campsite Family happily reunited

I just love this photo of the Campsite Family, reunited at our Tai Po Homing Centre and very happily so.  Not surprisingly they all have heartworm, in fact it's inevitable for any dog that isn't given heartworm prevention, especially those who live in the New Territories or Outlying Islands.  Where's there's a mosquito there's heartworm, and I don't know anywhere in Hong Kong that is completely free of these annoying insects.

Tanner too tested positive for heartworm, again no surprise as he came to us from AFCD Sheung Shui, New Territories.  Just one tablet a month of any heartworm preventative will keep dogs free from infection, but the message either isn't getting through or owners simply don't care.

The photo album of the Whiskers N Paws puppy afternoon HKDR Puppy Adoption Day 2nd May 2021 at Whiskers n Paws is now complete with all of the names, and every time I go through it I'm struck by the likeness of puppy Lyra to previous dogs we've had, in particular one favourite, Jack.  I know there's a certain look which comes up time and again, which is how the "breeds" came about, like Black Fluffy and so on.  Maybe we should call Lyra a "Jack" breed.

Talking of breeds, the photos of long-tailed corgi Jimmy were posted on the HKDR Facebook page today resulting in so many enquiries that I had to delete the post.  What was missed from the description was the fact that Jimmy can't live with other dogs, or at least would be better as an only dog, as he's a troublemaker and wants all the attention for himself.  I spent the day going through all the applications and as always we will choose the home that is most suitable for Jimmy.

We have other similar-sized dogs at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre that are fine with other dogs, but they don't have a breed label.

Our Flag Day is coming up in July, and this is an opportunity for all under-18s to volunteer, and I know there's a lot who are keen to help.  Please look out for details of volunteering sign-up.

HKDR will be holding our 2021 Flag Day on 24th July (Sat) on Hong Kong Island to raise funds for our public education programmes and the on-going operational costs of our two Homing Centres in Tai Po and Ap Lei Chau.
