Mon 3rd May: Happily failed fosters

That's Poppy in the middle

I have to update on some happy adoptions of dogs that have been in  homes which have turned into "Failed Fosters", not actually any kind of failure of course.   Starting with poodle Poppy, who joined her family of ex-HKDR dogs on a permanent basis. Poppy was one of the group of nine old poodles that came to us in poor condition, and all needing surgery and treatment of some kind.

Crusoe is forever

Crusoe is another lucky dog whose temporary stay has become forever.  He was a Stanley Barracks dog originally, but a little bit different from the others that came from there.

Mitsu (l) even looks like his "brother"

Finally Mitsu, who arrived at HKDR with his brother Bishi as puppies, and who has always been the shy one of the two.  Now he has a new "brother" who has helped him gain confidence and his adoption is confirmed.

You can see lots more photos of Crusoe and Mitsu on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/hkdogrescue

Most of these pups will be small adults

We've had a lot of enquiries for the newly arrived (and totally adorable) small-sized puppies, but with requests for trial adoptions.  We do offer trials under certain circumstances and will consider every case individually, but for these very young and highly adoptable youngsters we don't want to put them through the stress of moving to a new home, settling in and then being returned.  One upheaval in their lives is enough.

As well as the puppies, I met the new small-medium adults today, and they're also lovely.  James is a chow chow wannabe, but a very small and super friendly version of one.  Jenkins is atill a puppy at 5 months, and Jessie (1 year old) is very small.  Joshua has a front leg deformity that we'll need to get checked out, and Jilly (6 years) seems to have an old leg injury that will also have to be investigated.  Johnnie (2 years) is very lovely, although a little bit nervous. All are staying at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre if you want to meet them, but please remember to complete the adoption questionnaire in advance.  It's at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

This new boy is 11 years old

We took in another small dog today, an 11 year-old shih tzu boy who's very cute too.  He'll be heading off to the vet on Tuesday for his checkover.

Haggis was definitely not happy

I'd mentioned my aging Lamma dogs the other day, and today was the day I felt Haggis was suffering too much to continue.  I had a meeting in the afternoon but went to Concordia with Haggis on what I thought would be his final journey. Dr Cheryl was the vet on duty, and she asked if I wanted her to check Haggis over before letting him go, just in case there was a reason for his deterioration.  With bloods and ultrasound all normal, which wasn't what I expected, what the problem turned out to be was diabetes, and Haggis already at the stage of diabetic ketoacidosis.  With that part solved, Haggis needed to stay in hospital to start insulin therapy, but there still remained one mystery.  Haggis had been bleeding from his mouth as well as passing blood,  which along with him losing the use of his back legs was what made me decide today was the day I had to let him go.  The cause for that bleeding still remains to be seen.
