Weds 9th Dec: When the unexpected happens

While it seems a lot of people are putting off adopting puppies until closer to Christmas, there was a surprise and very touching adoption at our Tai Po Homing Centre today.  We really hadn't been expecting the recently surrendered three-legged husky, who also suffers from epilepsy, to find a home at all, let alone so quickly, but he left to start his new life against all odds.

"Adopted! Marco the three-legged husky boy came to HKDR as Freddie. Freddie/ Marco is 8 years old and on long term treatment for epilepsy, sadly his original owner “couldn’t” take him along when he left Hong Kong.
We renamed him Marco because we expected he would stay with us for quite a while given the conditions he has, and that he needed a fresh start in life. No one would have expected today to be his special day - until this kind couple walked into our centre, saying they wanted to adopt a senior dog who was in most need of a home and then decided Marco would be joining their family. They have also decided to keep Marco’s original name, Freddie, hoping this poor boy’s life will just resume to normal and everything happened before was just a bad dream.
Adoption does not always mean getting the perfect dog, sometimes it just means sharing your love with a dog that needed it the most. Thank you kind adopters!"

I keep asking Kathy and Ka Yan in the office at Ap Lei Chau about (Miss) Piggy and how she's settling in after her move from Lamma, and I was so happy to hear that she's not only doing well in general terms, but that she has already joined the "Shy Dog" gang and their games.  Now I just wish I'd moved her sooner, but I suppose things happen at the right time and now it's enough to know she's really enjoying life for the first time.  I've seen so many very timid dogs change over the years so I know it happens, and now it's Piggy's turn.   These "scaredy dogs" don't do well on their own and really need a friend for emotional support, but as a pair they're perfectly homeable given the right situation.

The mother dog and her six pups arrived at Ap Lei Chau today, so now I have to think of names again.  At least we don't need foster homes for these little ones as they have the perfect milk supply, but they may quickly outgrow their space.
