Sat 12th Dec: Thinking long term

I can't say it's not frustating seeing so many visitors coming to our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre to meet the puppies and not immediately choosing one.  It works the other way too, I mean us not thinking the home would be suitable for the puppy for whatever reason, or often multiple reasons.  There's nothing worse than letting a puppy go to a home and then having it returned, and we have to be especially cautious at this time of year when Christmas is so close and children are desperate to have a puppy.  If anything this is the worst time to adopt, although I expect celebrations and visitors are going to be far fewer than usual.  Please think long-term and consider a dog's life is on average fifteen years during which time children will have grown up and many circumstances may have changed.  Can you really guarantee to take a dog with you whatever and wherever?  So many families are leaving Hong Kong, or are planning to, and taking your dog(s) with you may be more than you can afford, and we're getting many surrender enquiries.

It's good that potential adopters are taking time to think over all eventualities and not rushing into things, and many visitors today were doing exactly what we ask and considering everything carefully. The family who chose Luke today had been considering adoption for a while, so we can be sure that this is really a home for life.

Tara was also chosen today and going to what we already know to be a wonderful home.  She's been staying at Whiskers N Paws, so her leaving (on Monday) will create a space for another puppy.  We had quite a few returning from their foster homes today so the space is really needed.
