I said before that I seemed to have chosen the wrong litter of the two I was asked to take, as yet another puppy had to be rushed for emergency care after suffering seizures and Berry is now staying at Concordia Pet Care for treatment. It's a tough call when a three week-old puppy is so ill that it needs hospitalisation and medications for both tick fever and to control seizures, as all drugs have side effects and I worry about the long-term results. Sometimes it's better when nature takes over and the decisions are out of your hands, but for now we'll fight for little Berry. The remaining three are doing OK thankfully.
Before talking about the next veterinary case (and the cost of all of these is extensive as I'm sure you can appreciate), I want to share some happy adoption news starting with older puppy Poppy, who had already been adopted once but returned when the resident dog wasn't happy. She has now moved to Lantau with her new family and I think she'll really enjoy the space.
I was so happy to know that Kiki will have a poodle brother in her new home because she and her sister Mandy love the Homing Centre poodles so much. I really don't know why but as soon as they first came to us they headed straight for the poodles for comfort and play, and now Kiki has a poodle of her own (also adopted from HKDR).
The other vet case was for Owen, another one of the four labradors surrendered as seniors from the same home and all in really bad condition. Regular readers will know Bobby lost his fight just the other day, and Dr Elaine from Concordia had prepared us and the foster for bad news following the splenectomy today (spleen removal) as there were already known complications. The good news came late in the day that the surgery had gone well with no blood transfusion needed (we had been on standby), and although Owen will have to stay in hospital for a couple of days we're hoping he can go back to his foster home after that.
There was yet another surrender request today due to the family leaving Hong Kong (yes, I know, there's no reason not to take the dog), this time for a "gentle giant" five year-old Malamute.
