Without constantly repeating myself, you already know that this year has been tough for many, including charities like HKDR unable to hold our big fundraising events. Even our planned sale for the weekend before Christmas can't now take place due to the even stricter social distancing rules, and it's incredibly frustrating to say the least.
Happily there are still ways you can support without needing to join big groups, and they're all pretty simple. Even purchasing our HKDR merchandise, or items like the donated wines arriving on Friday, all go towards keeping us afloat. You can also include some items like treats and dog chews in your regular online Whiskers N Paws (https://www.facebook.com/WhiskersNPaws) orders and they will drop them off at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre. By the way, thank you for all such donations as the dogs really do enjoy getting such special extras.
You may think a few dollars isn't enough to make a difference, but add everything up and it's more than you think. If you have been to any of our Peak to Fong events over the years you may remember the Gino's Gelato dog ice-cream eating competition, and the traditional handing over of the giant token cheque, the total of the year's purchase of Doggie Gelato donated to HKDR. Of course that didn't take place this year, but that didn't mean we were forgotten......
Isn't that amazing? So remember, every time you treat your dog to a Gino's Doggie Gelato, you're also making a donation to HKDR! Yay!
Another way to donate from the comfort of your home is via www.twopresents.com, meaning you or your children share your celebrations with HKDR, or the participating charity of your choice. It's so easy to do and everything is arranged for you, so check out the website and see how it all works. Unfortunately the handing over of the Giant Cheque at Whiskers N Paws has also been put on hold for the time being, but that doesn't mean you can't still participate in the sharing.
I had a sad evening after one of the four senior labradors who were surrendered to us earlier this year had to be euthanised after it was found that he had a mass on his heart. Thanks to the vets at Concordia Pet Care for their care of Bobby, but even more to his fantastic foster home who provided Bobby with love, happiness and so much fun in the final stage of his sad life. We're always incredibly grateful to the kindness shown by so many, and although I gripe about the horrible dog owners in truth the good far outweigh the bad.
As Bobby's life came to an end, we received a surrender request for another eleven year-old yellow labrador being left behind as his family fly off to Canada. We were first contacted by Cooper's family a year ago when they asked if we could re-home their French bulldog Biscuit, because as a snub-nosed dog he couldn't fly to Canada with them. They would, however, be taking Cooper. Now it seems that Biscuit has a new home and Cooper is too old to tolerate a long-haul flight, and his eviction is imminent. Both dogs were originally adopted from HKDR so of course we will make sure Cooper is safe, but we don't want him to have to stay at the Tai Po Homing Centre. Can anyone help?
