Our Tai Po "staff" are ready to show you around |
The case highlighted once again the problem with small independent shelters, many of which are set up and run by well-meaning volunteers but they quickly find the situation overwhelming. Even at HKDR we receive many requests to take in dogs that have been found abandoned or whose owners no longer want them, and as much as we want to help there's obviously a limit to what we can do. Our Tai Po Homing Centre is very big with over four hundred dogs living there, and all of them need food and water, veterinary care, exercise and attention. That's a huge daily task for the small number of staff and the volunteers, most of whom can only come at weekends. However we feel that we achieve the almost-impossible every day and that our dogs are happy and well cared for, which is why we have decided to invite the public to come and see for themselves:
"If you are a dog lover and would like to donate to a dog rescue organisation, how can you know that the money you give is going to be properly used to help the dogs? With too many tragic stories about shelters where the dogs are imprisoned in cages and deprived of the most basic of needs, sometimes these places have been receiving donations from well-meaning donors who had no idea that their gift was being misused.
That is why we are inviting anyone to our Tai Po Homing Centre who wants to take a look at our facilities and the dogs that are staying with us. We hope you will see that our dogs are well fed and cared for, and can enjoy the company of other dog friends as well as spacious enclosures where they can run and play freely. You can also see the staff and volunteers that are busy taking the dogs out for walks, playing with them or just giving them cuddles and love.
We strive to provide the best possible care for all of the dogs at our Homing Centres until they are lucky enough to be chosen for adoption, and our promise to every dog is a home for life until that happy day comes.
Our Tai Po Homing Centre is open daily from 10am to 6pm. You are welcome to visit without making a reservation. For enquiries, please email eva@hongkongdogrescue.com"
All of what we do costs money, and that's why we are always trying to think of ways to raise funds, or even just to spead the word about HKDR and our work. The upcoming Summer Funday taking place on Saturday 25th May at The Pulse in Repulse Bay is more about giving back than fundraising because entry is free, and we hope that the weather will be fine so everyone can have a great day out.
