Sat 4th March: Pet Carnival at Sheung Wan

Getting the clean up message accross
As I wrote yesterday, I had to be out early today to be at the opening of the Pet Carnival for midday, totally confusing the dogs whose internal clocks work with precision timing.  They have such a fixed routine and don't appreciate change, but it just can't be helped sometimes.
One of the &Dear games

Today's event took place at the waterfront dog park and was organised by the Central and Western District Council, with our contribution being the booklets and free giveaways, the theme of which was the importance of cleaning up after your dog and keeping the environment clean.   The lovely creative team at &Dear provided not only illustrations for the booklet, but also fun games and prizes, and to complete the party atmosphere the sun made a very welcome appearance.  Thank you to everyone who came to support, especially our fantastic HKDR volunteers and &Dear for such great work.
Rocky was one of 3 Tai Po dogs at the Carnival

We seem to be going through a very strange phase at the moment, maybe something to do with the moon or the planet Mercury or just plain bad luck, but trying to deal with some of the recent cases has stretched patience and trust.  Now yet another shiba inu that was supposed to be surrendered to us, an eight month-old female, had instead been "given to my neighbour" as if said neighbour had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.   This happens so often that I really find such stories hard to believe, and while it's absolutely fine that a dog doesn't come to us I worry about what happened and where it's gone.

Some dogs did arrive as expected and terrier
Tuffy is very sweet, just not to cats
Tuffy, who came on Friday, left for a trial today to see how he would get on with the resident dog and cat.  Unfortunately the cat side of things didn't work, but this came back from the very heartbroken would-be adopter:

- gorgeous temperament
- loves children
- comes up and asks for huggles
- playful
- rarely barks (he barked when I tried to leave him to go and get the car)
- HATES cats
- clever
- super cuddly
- not 'snappy' (even when being bathed)

The only shiba inu that actually arrived
Four other dogs came from what appeared to be a home breeder, but was certainly a pretty horrible environment.  A beautiful young husky boy went to Tai Po while a bichon frise (two years old) and the only shiba inu out of three surrenders that actually turned up is four years.  There was also an older mixed breed puppy who came from the same place, although I'm never sure how these random odd-ones-out end up at breeders.
