Mon 6th March: Lucky timing

Husky Baloo
There was the usual Monday rush today, not helped by the van having to be picked up after its annual "medical" meaning it wasn't available in the morning.  We still had to get all of the new weekend arrivals to the vet for health checks and vaccinations,  although it was too late for the new husky (now called Baloo) to get over from Tai Po.  As it happened it was lucky for him because a family came to meet him and will hopefully adopt after he has been for his health checks.

We also have several puppies in various stages of tick fever, with three little newbies only having been taken to Acorn on Sunday when I noticed their gums were pale (a sign of anaemia), and others in the post-treatment phase of being fine but still having to go for regular blood tests to see that their red cell count is stable.   Tick fever is something that has become more and more common, and unfortunately there are many cases now where the standard treatments just don't work and we have to combine drugs to get the desired result.   It's not only the cost that is a burden, but also the time that it takes for a puppy to be declared fully fit and ready for adoption, and that's a real problem.

Yoshi has an ear infection but no heartworm
I finally got to take bichon Bubbles, shiba inu Yoshi and very large-sized puppy Logan (from the same horrible place in Yuen Long) to AFCD for licensing, and then on to Acorn for their checks. Bubbles tested positive for heartworm while Yoshi was surprisingly free of the creatures, although he has a bad ear infection.  Logan, being around seven months, is healthy.
Tuffy got back just in time

Terrier Tuffy had been at Acorn for a blood test prior to desexing and heartworm treatment on Tuesday, and while I was out and about I'd received an adoption enquiry from a home that I thought would be perfect for him.  I replied saying that he would be back at the Homing Centre by five-ish, and I got back to Ap Lei Chau at the same time as the family who had come to meet him.  It was love at first sight (both ways) and Tuffy was taken home.

Bubbles has heartworm but was adopted regardless
I had left Iris to handle the adoption as I needed to get back to Lamma to drop puppy Boomer off at my neighbour's house for fostering, and after I'd gone another adopter came to meet the dogs and left with bichon frise Bubbles.  That's what I call lucky timing.
Goldie is a puppy and one of a family of fuzzies

During the day we also took in a new guest at our Tai Po Homing Centre, one of a family that a group of volunteers have been catching and desexing.  This one is called Goldie and is one of the younger ones, but there are others waiting in line to be given space at our Centre and the chance of a home.  I love this fuzzy look and hope that someone will like Goldie too.
