Thurs 13th Oct: Return of the Chung Hom Kok collie

Beautiful April
There seem to be so many dogs in need of veterinary attention at the moment that it's getting quite confusing.  Many of those we take from AFCD are either old or sick, or both, and because we are still without a driver we aren't able to do the clinic run as often as we would like. When I took Lamma puppies Artie and April (by taxi) for their due vaccinations in the afternoon, there were a whole pile of crates filled with our dogs, as well as some larger ones on leashes.

Schnauzer Jade is now lump-free
New schnauzer Jade had a massive lump removed from her shoulder, and happily that was just fat rather than anything sinister.  Alexander from Tai Po has lost a huge amount of weight recently and has now stopped eating, so we need to find out why.  Little Bumpy, who is all bones, turned out to have diabetes, which explained his condition given that he has not had any insulin for some time, if ever.  Thankfully I spotted him at AFCD and was able to take him out on medical grounds even though he has a registered owner somewhere.
Bumpy was close to death without his insulin

There were several other dogs needing various checks and treatments as well as three new puppies from AFCD Shatin.  Even they weren't straightforward as although healthy, two were without the microchips that had been (badly) inserted before they left the Animal Management Centre.  That means having to take them back to AFCD to have new microchips, and that will have to be done before Sunday and Whiskers N Paws.

All three of the new puppies are lovely but there is one special one, a "breed" I invented called the Chung Hom Kok Collie.  This "breed" originated from a family of dogs who lived in an isolated area of Hong Kong Island and interbred, resulting in a very distinctive look.  Although the original Chung Hom Kok dogs all ended up being desexed, it seems that the strong genes had already spread and from time to time pop up in dogs like this new puppy.   Not only is the "breed" very beautiful but they also have lovely temperaments, so if you are interested in being one of a select group of CHK Collie owners you can come to Whiskers N Paws to meet the new boy who is around five months old.  I've called him Tanner after a previous CHK collie, shown here.
