Mon 8th Jan: Explaining our new fundraising campaign

Duster

There was no surprise when tiny girl Duster was adopted today, as she's a perfect size and temperament for any home.

If you're looking for a small adult dog we still have plenty waiting to meet you, including little pom Kimmy.  He's only two years old and very sweet.

Pom Kimmy

New puppies Dimple and Dudley moved to their wonderful foster home (Instagram @pawfect_foster_diary), while puppy Finn can be seen @foster_pawtatoes.  Why is this gorgeous boy still waiting for a home?
Finn won't be a large sized adult

I wanted to explain something about our new fundraising campaign in more detail, because I expect some of you are wondering why we need a new Homing Centre when we already have our Kennedy Town locations.

When we were forced out of our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre due to redevelopment of the site, we really struggled to find somewhere else that was large enough to accommodate everything and everyone.  When we ran out of time we were forced to take two smaller properties in Kennedy Town, which became three when we were so kindly offered the Elgin Street space for two years.  That became our office, retail shop and "Red Dog" Centre.

The downside of having three separate spaces is that we needed additional staff to operate on a daily basis, as well as having to move dogs and items between the different locations.  It also meant having to pay three sets of utility bills, and other expenses which added to our basic running costs.  I always hoped that one day we would find another space that was large enough to be able to pull everything back together again, and then one day the exact dream property became available, in the perfect location and at an affordable rent.

As it happened, the two years at Elgin Street was coming to an end, as was the lease on one of the Kennedy Town sites, with a rent increase due if we wanted to stay there.  The timing was just right to take the plunge and take on the new available space, even if it meant having to start all over again with the planning and renovation.

However, the potential Homing Centre had been completely gutted of all fittings, including the floor, air conditioning, and other essentials like the plate glass frontage.  We can make do without all of the more detailed interior furnishings, but there are basic essentials that we can't ignore, and even these items are going to cost more than we can afford without support from outside.   This is why we are asking for help to make our dream come true:

"Other than the dogs, which are obviously a major part of our lives at HKDR, we've located a potential new site for a Homing Centre on Hong Kong Island, one that is large enough for everything to come together again, just as we were when we had our last Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre. The only barrier to achieving this dream is money, or at least the resources to be able to set up again from scratch.

We don't receive large government grants, or major corporate support. We don't have spare funds sitting in the bank, and we have to work hard to raise every dollar to be able to continue to save lives and take care of the homeless dogs and puppies under our care. In fact, balancing our finances every month is always a worry, so now we have to ask for help from outside to achieve our dream.

Individual donations are an obvious way to support, but we're also calling for help in other ways, such as skills and time. The potential space is currently a shell, and we will need to build, and paint, and lay flooring, all of the basics for a new beginning.

If there are individuals who have building skills, or volunteer groups who offer pro bono help to charities, we need you! Please email info@hongkongdogrescue.com if you can support in any way, or even have contacts of people or volunteer groups that you know of that can do this kind of work.

We have also listed the donation methods above. Thank you for all the big or small help and donations".
