Fri 12th Jan: What about Ned?

Yannie and Winki with Ned, alongside two SIS students

We were invited by the Singapore International School (HK) to participate in their Vertical Marathon fundraising event today, taking along one of our lovely dogs, Ned.

"The Vertical Marathon is an in-school event where participants climb stairs to raise awareness and funds for charities".

We're always happy to collaborate with students and school projects, the only exclusion being dog walking or helping out at the Homing Centres for under-18's, for safety reasons.  Still, there are many ways in which students can support HKDR, and the Vertical Marathon is a great example, and we appreciate being invited.

Now I want to talk about Ned, who has been with us since he was a very young puppy.  It became clear very early on that he had a problem with eating, and he was diagnosed as having megaesophagus.

"Megaesophagus in dogs is a condition in which the esophagus enlarges and loses the ability to transport food from the mouth to the stomach. Weak muscles slow down and make it difficult to complete the transfer from the mouth to the stomach. The food gets effectively “stopped” in the esophagus, and the reaction of the esophagus is to “eject” the food (called regurgitation)."

A young Ned in his Bailey Chair

Ned isn't sick in the usual sense, his condition just means that he needs to eat sitting up in a Bailey Chair, and we have to be vigilant about him being given treats or snacks by volunteers. For this reason he stays at our Elgin Street "Red Dog" Centre, where everyone is aware of the feeding restrictions, and as much as possible he's taken out for hikes and days away so he can enjoy what every young dog should experience.   Ned is a wonderful and very happy young boy, but he needs a real home.  Anyone adopting him will also be given his Bailey Chair, and Ned is so used to using it that he knows exactly what to do, even closing the door by himself after sitting down.  Who can give this boy the life he really wants and deserves?
