Weds 3rd March: Puppies again

Scooter

It doesn't matter how many years I've been doing this work I never tire of watching puppies play, and seeing them so happy and carefree is guaranteed to make me smile.  Take a look at Eagle's photos and videos to see what I mean: https://www.facebook.com/HKDR.DOGGIES.  I'm not sure which one I'd choose if I was looking for a puppy, but I have a big soft spot for black fluffies so I suspect it would be Scooter.

You can also see more photos of dogs and puppies at both Homing Centres here:  https://www.facebook.com/HappyWoofHK

All of the puppies that Eagle shares are staying at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre which is open every single day of the year, even during holidays and typhoons. Please start by completing the questionnaire if you're interested in adopting a dog or puppy of any kind and from either of our Homing Centres, and remember to give as much information as possible to help us make suggestions based on what you tell us.  The questionnaire is at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Many, if not most, of the adoption enquiries are for small-sized puppies, and of those most also want low or non-shedding breeds.  As a rescue organisation the majority of dogs and puppies we take in are mixed breeds of unknown parentage that will grow to be medium to large as adults.  We can't tell when puppies are very young what their final size will be, or even what kind of coat they will have, as everything changes during the first year of a dog's life.  Very occasionally we will get the smaller breeds in, and we have a waiting list for such dogs and puppies so they're not advertised as being available.  Some of these puppies are surrendered to us, and some come from AFCD like the two pomeranian puppies today.  These were airport confiscations, meaning they were sent to Hong Kong by a breeder (probably in Taiwan) and for whatever reason not allowed entry.  It takes some time but eventually such puppies are released for re-homing and we can collect them from the airport.  By that time we already have adopters waiting so the puppies can go straight off to their new homes.

I should add that as such small-breed puppies come in so infrequently and there are so many adoption applications for them, we will choose the homes that we feel can provide the best life.  Unfortunately that means leaving many other good homes disappointed, but we can't provide what's not available.   We really never know from day to day what messages will come in with news of dogs and puppies needing homes, so it's as much a surprise to us as anyone else.

We were asked by AFCD to remind dog owners that certain parks that were previously only for human visitors are now open to dogs as well.  This is a trial scheme which will hopefully be expanded to a further thirty five venues if everything goes well, and I think it's a huge step forward in efforts to see dogs accepted in Hong Kong as they are in so many other countries.

In response to the public’s requests to LCSD on opening up parks for them to visit with pets, the Trial Scheme of “Inclusive Park for Pets” was launched in 2019.  Six parks under purview of the LCSD were open up for members of the public to enter and use with their pets.  The LCSD has regularised the six pilot venues and designated 35 additional leisure venues across the territory for use as "Inclusive Parks for Pets" starting from February 2021 after consulting respective District Councils.  Among all, over 10 “Inclusive Parks for Pets” are at promenades or at parks nearby to bring vibrancy to the harbourfront areas.  Below please find the dedlicated webpage of " Inclusive Park for Pets".
