Thurs 11th Feb: Please stay on high alert over the holiday

Tumbler

With it being the last day before the Lunar New Year I made a supermarket dash which meant sharing the van with Tai Po dog Tumbler, who'd been sent to Acorn as an emergency case in the morning with suspected GDV (bloat).  It had happened suddenly and luckily spotted immediately by the staff,  but it ended up being something different but no less serious, in fact it's worse:  Tumbler almost certainly has lung cancer.  There were two options, have Tumbler euthanised or to send him back to the Homing Centre to start on high dose steroids, not as a cure but a temporary life extension.  As he'd only just started showing any symptoms and had seemed fine until this morning after his playtime in the free-running area of the Tai Po Centre I opted for the latter, so Tumbler can spend some more time having the best of the best care and love before the inevitable happens.  As with almost all of our Tai Po seniors,  Tumbler started out as a Lamma puppy living with me (and many other puppies) and he was so beautiful back then, and still is of course.

I still haven't come up with names for the ten puppies who went off to their foster homes as soon as they arrived, so that's one of the many tasks on my to-do list over the next few days.  I hope you all have more exciting things planned for the holiday, and if nothing else it's great weather for taking our Tai Po dogs for a hike if you're a registered volunteer.  I know there's already a list of lucky dogs chosen to go out for the day on Sunday, which also happens to be Valentine's Day.

Judi and Sasha were both poisoned

As a reminder though, if you're taking any dogs out for a walk please be on high alert for poisoned bait that may have been laid, especially in the Cyberport area.  Yet another ex-HKDR became a victim today, and tragically it was the second dog in the same home. Judi hadn't even eaten any of the poison, but had licked her dog sister who had.  This is such a sad event, and I feel heartbroken for the lovely family who we got to know quite well from their visits to Whiskers N Paws and three adoptions.

If you're not a volunteer and have other things planned for the long weekend, you could always support the dogs by donating some treats as a celebration.

Ex-HKDR Chuckle, now Thor, wishes everyone a prosperous Year of the Ox! 🐂🧧On this first day of the New Year, we are kicking off a treat drive for HKDR dogs.
Our dogs absolutely love and enjoy their occasional treat time, but with all the day-to-day expenses we just don’t get to spend precious donations on treats. Why not consider giving laisees to our 600+ furry kids by giving them a yummy treat in CNY? You will certainly be making some dogs VERY happy!
If you would like to donate treats for HKDR dogs, please send them to Tai Po or Ap Lei Chau Homing Centres. Both centres are open as usual throughout CNY.
*Our preferred treats are good quality, meaty treats that are healthy for the dogs. Biscuits are not preferred.
Whiskers N Paws
has a good selection of dog treats. You can ask them to deliver to HKDR Tai Po (6, Shek Lin Road, Tai Po) when you place an order with them.
If you run a dog treat brand and would like to make a product donation, please email Eva at eva@hongkongdogrescue.com
Thank you for the love for our dogs, and best wishes for the New Year! Woof woof!

  1. Oh, I just have to comment about the dog poisoni8ngs, and how absolutely heartbreaking it is for the family to lose 2 dogs, Judi and Sasha to the poison. My heart goes out to them. Why can't they install cameras at dog parks???
