Mon 8th Feb: More bad news, but good news too

Coolio at Whiskers N Paws before he was adopted in 2017

The poisoning cases were much higher than we knew about yesterday and I heard that five more dogs were affected, all in the Cyberport park area, while other random poisonings were being reported from other places including the Pulse in Repulse Bay, Sai Kung and elsewhere.  I would have to guess that this is the work of more than one bitter and twisted individual, and I just hope that the police take this matter as seriously as they should.  All of the families affected have been left shocked and heartbroken, and we're especially sad when the dogs that died were those that came from HKDR, if only because we knew and loved them too.  Coolio was another one of those.

In fact I was pretty upset in the afternoon to meet with three police officers at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre after a puppy we'd innocently accepted turned out to have apparently belonged to someone, and they were accusing HKDR of being complicit in accepting stolen property.  I asked why they weren't out trying to catch the poisoner(s) rather than harrassing an innocent dog rescue organisation and they replied "What poisoning?"  Enough said.

Black poodle Tulip is missing as she's in hospital

There was good news and bad news about the nine poodles, all of whom have now been thoroughly checked by a vet at Concordia, and ages estimated.  The bad news is that they all have erlichia (a form of tick fever), hardly surprising given the huge number of ticks, as well as fleas, that they had on them. Several have other health issues including a broken jaw (Jasmine), mammary tumours (Poppy), shrunken/blind eyes (Violet) and all have ear infections and terrible teeth.  The good news is that underneath all of this they are younger then we first thought, so once they have been treated they should be very homeable.  Of course Violet's eyes can't be fixed but being blind doesn't stop an otherwise healthy dogs from living a full life.

We're very grateful for the contributions received so far to help us to cover the large vet bills that are going to be coming our way for these poodles, as well as to Momo's Crochet for the kind offer to make and sell adorable crochet poodles with all proceeds coming to HKDR.
