Weds 1st June: May's lucky winners

Milky and Theo adopted together
It seems incredible that we are almost halfway through a year that barely seems to have started, and so far hasn't been proving to be a very good one.  For whatever reason the first five months were very slow for adoptions, and part of that was obviously due to us having no website because once normal service was resumed (and thanks again to Moxitek for their very kind help in building a new website) we saw quite a few dogs going to new homes, especially from Tai Po.  These were the lucky winners of this month's  Life Lottery from our main Homing Centre:  Muesli, Joseph, Theo and Milky, April, Mango, Lyra, Zeppelin and Cherry, Parker, Patchi, Amanda and Becky , with Mali and Mushy leaving for trial adoption too.
Cherry and Zeppelin went as a pair

I'm often asked if things are improving in terms of dogs being abandoned and the numbers that need rescuing, and in terms of small dogs and breeds the answer is probably yes, but as far as the mixes are concerned we are still seeing the same numbers as before.  Happily there are more people open to adopting mongrels than in previous years, although not many rescue organisations are even willing to accept adults as they are harder to home than puppies.  That leaves HKDR as one of the very few life savers for mixed-breed dogs that end up at AFCD, and that puts a lot of pressure on our limited space and the staff/volunteers needed to take care of them, not to mention the financial burden.
Sooty is one of the very sweet Stanley Barracks pups

Unofficial breeding grounds like Stanley Barracks, that use AFCD as an easy way to control the number of dogs and puppies, mean large groups needing help at the same time.  Although I have already taken the puppies there are still two young almost-adults waiting at Pokfulam AFCD, not to mention other older dogs.  It just never gets easier.
