Thurs 12th April: Herbert's chance

I love that more and more people are looking at adoption instead of going to a pet shop or breeder as a first option, but it's still frustrating that what so many are asking for are small breed puppies.  Although we do very occasionally have such puppies, as a rescue organisation we take in dogs that have already been in homes so they're no longer babies.  The only types that regularly come in as "brand new" are the mixed breed pups, whose adult size is anyone's guess and parentage unknown.  That doesn't make them any worse or different, a fact that can be easily proved by our current available puppies, especially the slightly older ones who have moved upt to Tai Po.

Herbert was in a few foster homes before ending up at Ta Po
Herbert was the most recent foster home returnee who was sent up to the Big Place, and he was chosen today to go for a trial with another ex-HKDR puppy-now-adult.  Herbert is a lovely boy, as is Monty, who was also in a foster home for some time as a baby.  Inky (who used to be Ebony) and Sidney were the "Meat Puppies", all of whom turned out to have the loveliest of natures. Willy and Cello are still in ther respective foster homes and are at Whiskers N Paws with all of the others every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

Chowder isn't a labrador!
Sidney nad his litter are all very gentle pups

Chowder came to us from AFCD having been confiscated at the Chinese border after having been bought as a labrador puppy.  Smuggling cheap puppies over the border is very common, but there's no guarantee that you'll get what you paid for, and the saying "being sold a pup" can be taken quite literally in this context.  Chowder is not only nothing like a labrador, but I'm pretty sure he's more closely related to a small breed than a large one.  Just look at that cute and distinctive underbite.

I went to AFCD today to take out a litter of five young puppies, and while I had hoped they would be ready for this Sunday's puppy afternoon they're too scared to be able to cope with the stress.  However two further pups arrived in the afternoon, along with a young Sheltie from a breeder so we have plenty of choice for anyone wanting a puppy.

In fact our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre has been filling up with a lot of new small dogs this week, and several of them are younger adults, and very sweet too.

I also took a large adult from AFCD today, one that someone had found on the street but was unable to keep.  I called her Ora, and she is the sweetest girl who responded to Dr Tony's body check by rolling on her back.  She was so happy to be taken out of her AFCD kennel and wanted to hug and kiss everyone around.  She had no microchip or license to show an age and she has definitely been a mother more than once, but this lovely dog must have been a family member until being thrown out.  I hope she finds a new family to love her, but there are so many waiting.
