Tues 2nd Aug: 10 schnauzers arriving soon

Taking another unplanned day off might seem like a good thing, but I have things to do which aren't helped by being forced to stay at home.  I had intended taking Frank the bulldog to be euthanised on Monday, not a nice thing to have to do but necessary given his condition, and being let off the hook was a relief of course, although maybe not for Frank himself.  The sampans were again not running today and as the days pass there are other things piling up that need to be done.  Putting off the inevitable only makes it harder, but these things are part and parcel of what I do and without doubt the worst.

Chance and his lady friends hanging out in the dog park
On a much happier note it's countdown time for three-legged Chance with his flight to Canada on 7th August, just a few days away now.  It's been quite a wait but at least it's given Chance the time to have his heartworm treatment so he is one hundred percent fit and healthy to start his new life.  His story, which includes his adopters' own life-changing visit to Hong Kong and how they met their dog-to-be, is worth a full blog in itself, but I'll wait to write that until Chance is safely home.

We already have schnauzer Titus and his "sister" Wendy
Life-changing scenarios take place almost every day at HKDR as you could say that every dog that comes to us experiences a complete change in circumstance, and hopefully for the better.  On Saturday ten schnauzers will be brought to us by someone, or rather a group, who are taking them from a breeder.  Not having anywhere to keep the dogs or a way of homing them, we were asked if we could accept the schnauzers and I agreed.  Now we need to find homes and fosters before the weekend, as an additional ten dogs in our small Homing Centre is going to be a tight squeeze to say the least.  So if you are interested in adopting, or able to foster, please let us know.  I've been told they are between three and five years old, although I can't guarantee anything until we know for sure. For all foster enquiries contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, or complete the adoption questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com.   Poodles are known to be good for those who may have allergies to dogs in general, but schnauzers are also recommended for the same reason.

With the end of the long summer holidays in sight it's time to start planning for the coming months, and for our Education & Training Manager, Cactus, that has meant putting together a new series of "Taking the Lead" workshops for the autumn. These workshops are:

- Designed to help improve dog-human understanding and so reduce the number of pets being abandoned.

- Cover a variety of subjects, each of them targeting a different section of the dog-owning community. Other than the very popular workshops like Grooming, Aromatics and Dogs & Babies, we have two new workshops this year - Caring for Senior Dogs and Puppy Basic Training.

-  Each workshop is packed with practical information and hands-on skills that both new and experienced dog owners will find very useful.

-  All proceeds will go to support HKDR's work.

- Workshop details and application please visit :
