Fri 18th May: What's in the word "new"?

Della (left) was adopted today

There's definitely a psychological response to the word "new", because despite the fact that we already have many small dogs, including poodles, who are immediately available, young, and have been through all of the vet checks, vaccinations and so on, when there is a new intake there's massive interest from potential adopters.  From experience I already know that not all of these are genuinely serious about having a dog, as sadly we have been through the disappointment of let-downs time and time again, but some of the potential homes will almost certainly end up adopting.  Again sadly, most enquiries have been for the same dog (Julie), even though an almost identical poodle girl was also available until today when Della was adopted.

In every intake there's a mix of young and old, healthy and not really, and today's group included a very sad case of a small chihuahua mix who'd apparently been horrifically physically abused, and although rescued back in January is still not able to walk.  Somewhere I know there's a foster with a heart of gold who will be willing to take this poor boy to continue with his recovery, and if that's you please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com. The dog's name is Jinks, and although I won't share the videos I was sent of his awful condition when he was first found, I can tell you he has improved tremendously since then.

One dog that really caught my eye is Jolene, a Scottish terrier with a bad hair-do.  In fact many of the dogs are rather overgrown in the hair department, a good reminder that although poodles have a wool coat rather than fur, they need regular grooming to keep the knots and tangles under control.

I was on a bus coming back from the office when the photos of the new dogs' teeth were being sent to me by WhatsApp, so my age estimates may be a little bit off.  Iris will check again before the dogs head off to Acorn for their third age assessment, as well as health check and vaccinations.  Most of the dogs are very young, or fairly young, with only one or two being older or senior (like Jeremy).

The rush to offer a home to a new dog was evident when almost-Malinois Mochi first arrived, and we had several potential adopters lined up and wanting to meet her.  One by one they disappeared as the first flush of enthusiasm waned, until we were left with no one.  Then in a fluke accident Mochi broke her leg, and with that went any chance of anyone adopting.   Now the leg has fully healed and Mochi is back to full strength, and we really need a home for this fabulous young girl.

Beautiful Mochi

Mochi went for a swim with one of our staff members, Gigi, on her day off and had a great time! She is a friendly and playful dog who gets along well with other dogs and is always up for a game of fetch or a run around the yard. She has so much energy and will do well with an adopter who enjoys an active lifestyle.

If you're looking for an energetic, loving companion who will keep you on your toes, Mochi might just be the dog for you!
