Sun 10th July: A very full and busy day

I'm not sure whether to start with the adoptions, as I usually like to do, or the complete surprise arrival of seven small-sized dogs.  As we will be looking for homes for the latest intake maybe I should begin there, especially as they had to be sent to our HKDR@Elgin space due to the kennel cough currently making Kennedy Town a no-entry zone for new dogs and puppies.  We had to send an emergency team to Elgin Street to meet the new dogs, get them inside and settled, then fed and watered. Meanwhile I was coming up with names so you can easily identify them if you're interested in adopting.  The new dogs will have to go for their standard health check and vaccinations, plus licensing, and all are either very young or not too old. Please complete the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ if you would like to offer any of our dogs or puppies a home.

Eric Tang was the volunteer photographer at today's Whiskers N Paws puppy party, and as always his photos are beautiful Puppy Adoption Day 11th July 2022.  Looking through them, as I always do, I have to admit to being drawn to Ottilie and her sad-worried face, but it was Ozzie who was chosen by one family, and older puppy Zippy taken home by another. Zippy's adoption was especially lucky as he was one of the Whiskers N Paws full time residents, and his departure meant siblings Drake and Drummond could move in when they had to be returned from their foster home today.

Ottilie looks so worried

Sweet-as-Candy finally has a home

Two dogs also left our Tai Po Homing Centre today, one being little Candy and the other quite a new boy who will remain nameless for now because he will have a short trial period.  As for sweet-as-Candy, she's waited much longer than I had anticipated so I'm really happy that she has her forever family now.

Kai must be feeling a lot better now

Some other good news that is worth mentioning, a couple of items were found on the floor of puppy Kai's pen at Kennedy Town, easily identifiable as the two objects that were spotted on the X-ray I shared the other day.  Happily for Kai, and for us, that means no surgery will be necessary to remove the two dollar coin and hair clip.

Akio is back at Tai Po

It's a subject I've written about so many times that you might be thinking "not shibas again", but yes, unfortunately I have to mention that both Akio and Donny were returned from their adoptive homes for reasons that I would call typical shiba inu behaviour.  Neither are bad dogs, it's just that this breed is challenging for most dog families, and pretty much impossible for inexperienced adopters.  They definitely can't be kept in small apartments or be left alone for long hours, as they are such smart little dogs that they need pretty much constant mental stimulation and amusement.  If you can't provide that, in whichever form it comes, then you will find that they will make their own entertainment, which could include emptying your cupboards and stealing whatever's inside, running off with your shoes/clothes, or any kind of "game" they can dream up.   If you want a go-anywhere, do-anything constant companion then you will enjoy the fun and courage of a shiba, but they are not lap dogs and they're also not shy in using their teeth if unhappy so definitely can't be in a home with children.   If you genuinely think a shiba is just the dog for you, please complete the adoption questionnaire as a first step.
