Sun 2nd June: Still more arrivals

Miss Freckles was one of the new dogs today
Before I talk about who was adopted today I should mention that at the end of the afternoon we took in three additional small-sized dogs and one poodle, with more expected to arrive on Monday.  They appear to be related to the other small dogs that came to us just over a week ago, and certainly one is a female version of Freckles.  We don't know where the dogs are from, we're just very happy to take them in and find them loving and responsible new homes, which means having them desexed apart from anything else.

Of the previous group pug Twiglet, poodle Twizzle and mix Freckles were adopted on Saturday, with maybe-mother Amber going home today, as well as four of the five babies (in pairs) that might be hers.  Now we just have the black baby pup Daniel left, to me the cutest of them all and also the smallest.  As we have seen before the runt of the litter is often badly bullied by the stronger ones, so we had already had to separate Daniel.  Now we need a home for him, but he will need lots of attention being a singleton and we hope he can go to a home where there is already another dog that will be gentle and accept him.

The last of an ex-breeder group of poodles was also adopted today, and as Dana was going off to start her new life I received  photos of two of the group that were adopted earlier.  Seeing Ginger, once almost hairless and covered in mange and ringworm (fungal infection), made me hope that Daniel can also find a big brother or sister to look after him.

The way they were, 5 very sad ex-breeder poodles

The rain was a nuisance today at Whiskers N Paws, and although the afternoon started off as very hot but dry we soon had to grab everything and run for cover.  It's fine for the younger and smaller puppies to stay inside, but mixing in the bigger and older ones results in bullying.  It doesn't mean that the older ones are aggressive, it's just the way things work.  Removed from the puppy area the older ones reverted to be being sweet and well-behaved,  and it's this mixing of older-younger, larger-smaller, that makes us look at any resident dogs already in the home and whether they will accept a small newcomer.

Panda on Saturday
While waiting for the photos of the Sunday puppy afternoon, I can share Saturday's album by Bambi Yau  Puppy Adoption Day 1 June 2019 — at 康迪亞獸醫 Concordia Pet Care - Happy Valley.  Panda was one of the puppies at the Concordia Pet Care session, and while she was seen and chosen there she was picked up at Whiskers N Paws.

Little Cat's trial adoption didn't work out so she's back with us at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre.  It had nothing to do with Cat or how she behaved, it was just another case of the potential adopters not having thought through the realities of having a dog, the time and commitment involved.  We do ask every potential adopter to THINK before going ahead, but it doesn't always work that way.  Having a dog means a seven days-a-week routine of walking, playing, cleaning and taking care of.  They are like babies that never grow up, fully dependent on their humans for everything.  If you can't commit to this for the duration of a dog's life, consider fostering to see how it really is.  Please don't take in a puppy that you will abandon after a couple of years, or a dog that you won't want when it gets old or you move to another home or country.
